Dreams Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHIH JKJK CCCC LMLM

Who first said false as dreams Not one who sawA
Into the wild and wondrous world they swayB
No thinker who hath read their mystic lawA
No Poet who hath weaved them in his layB
-
Else had he known that through the human breastC
Cross and recross a thousand fleeting gleamsD
That passed unnoticed in the day's unrestC
Come out at night like stars in shining dreamsD
-
That minds too busy or to dull to markE
The dim suggestions of the noisier hoursF
By dreams in the deep silence of the darkE
Are roused at midnight with their folded powersF
-
Like that old fount beneath Dodona's oaksG
That dry and voiceless in the garish noonH
When the calm night arose with modest looksI
Caught with full wave the sparkle of the moonH
-
If now and then a ghastly shape glide inJ
And fright us with its horrid gloom or gleeK
It is the ghost of some forgotten sinJ
We failed to exorcise on bended kneeK
-
And that sweet face which only yesternightC
Came to thy solace dreamer did'st thou readC
The blessing in its eyes of tearful lightC
Was but the spirit of some gentle deedC
-
Each has its lesson for our dreams in soothL
Come they in shape of demons gods or elvesM
Are allegories with deep hearts of truthL
That tell us solemn secrets of ourselvesM
