IA
-
The despot treads thy sacred sandsB
Thy pines give shelter to his bandsB
Thy sons stand by with idle handsB
CarolinaC
He breathes at ease thy airs of balmD
He scorns the lances of thy palmD
Oh who shall break thy craven calmD
CarolinaC
Thy ancient fame is growing dimE
A spot is on thy garment's rimE
Give to the winds thy battle hymnE
CarolinaC

IIA
-
Call on thy children of the hillF
Wake swamp and river coast and rillF
Rouse all thy strength and all thy skillF
CarolinaC
Cite wealth and science trade and artG
Touch with thy fire the cautious martG
And pour thee through the people's heartG
CarolinaC
Till even the coward spurns his fearsH
And all thy fields and fens and meresH
Shall bristle like thy palm with spearsH
CarolinaC
-
IIIA
-
Hold up the glories of thy deadI
Say how thy elder children bledI
And point to Eutaw's battle bedI
CarolinaC
Tell how the patriot's soul was triedJ
And what his dauntless breast defiedJ
How Rutledge ruled and Laurens diedJ
CarolinaC
Cry till thy summons heard at lastK
Shall fall like Marion's bugle blastK
Re echoed from the haunted PastK
CarolinaC
-
IV-
-
I hear a murmur as of wavesH
That grope their way through sunless cavesH
Like bodies struggling in their gravesH
CarolinaC
And now it deepens slow and grandL
It swells as rolling to the landL
An ocean broke upon thy strandL
CarolinaC
Shout let it reach the startled HunsH
And roar with all thy festal gunsH
It is the answer of thy sonsH
CarolinaC
-
V-
-
They will not wait to hear thee callM
From Sachem's Head to Sumter's wallM
Resounds the voice of hut and hallM
CarolinaC
No thou hast not a stain they sayH
Or none save what the battle dayH
Shall wash in seas of blood awayH
CarolinaC
Thy skirts indeed the foe may partG
Thy robe be pierced with sword and dartG
They shall not touch thy noble heartG
CarolinaC
-
VI-
-
Ere thou shalt own the tyrant's thrallM
Ten times ten thousand men must fallM
Thy corpse may hearken to his callM
CarolinaC
When by thy bier in mournful throngsH
The women chant thy mortal wrongsH
'T will be their own funereal songsH
CarolinaC
From thy dead breast by ruffians trodN
No helpless child shall look to GodN
All shall be safe beneath thy sodN
CarolinaC
-
VII-
-
Girt with such wills to do and bearO
Assured in right and mailed in prayerO
Thou wilt not bow thee to despairO
CarolinaC
Throw thy bold banner to the breezeH
Front with thy ranks the threatening seasH
Like thine own proud armorial treesH
CarolinaC
Fling down thy gauntlet to the HunsH
And roar the challenge from thy gunsH
Then leave the future to thy sonsH
CarolinaC
