Go forth and bid the land rejoiceA
Yet not too gladly O my songB
Breathe softly as if mirth would wrongB
The solemn rapture of thy voiceA
-
Be nothing lightly done or saidC
This happy day Our joy should flowD
Accordant with the lofty woeD
That wails above the noble deadC
-
Let him whose brow and breast were calmE
While yet the battle lay with GodF
Look down upon the crimson sodF
And gravely wear his mournful palmE
-
And him whose heart still weak from fearG
Beats all too gayly for the timeH
Know that intemperate glee is crimeH
While one dead hero claims a tearI
-
Yet go thou forth my song and thrillJ
With sober joy the troubled daysK
A nation's hymn of grateful praiseK
May not be hushed for private illJ
-
Our foes are fallen Flash ye wiresL
The mighty tidings far and nighM
Ye cities write them on the skyM
In purple and in emerald firesL
-
They came with many a haughty boastN
Their threats were heard on every breezeO
They darkened half the neighboring seasO
And swooped like vultures on the coastN
-
False recreants in all knightly strifeP
Their way was wet with woman's tearsQ
Behind them flamed the toil of yearsR
And bloodshed stained the sheaves of lifeP
-
They fought as tyrants fight or slavesS
God gave the dastards to our handsT
Their bones are bleaching on the sandsT
Or mouldering slow in shallow gravesS
-
What though we hear about our pathU
The heavens with howls of vengeance rentV
The venom of their hate is spentV
We need not heed their fangless wrathU
-
Meantime the stream they strove to chainW
Now drinks a thousand springs and sweepsX
With broadening breast and mightier deepsX
And rushes onward to the mainW
-
While down the swelling current glidesX
Our Ship of State before the blastY
With streamers poured from every mastY
Her thunders roaring from her sidesX
-
Lord bid the frenzied tempest ceaseX
Hang out thy rainbow on the seaX
Laugh round her waves in silver gleeX
And speed her to the port of peaceX
