The Sliprails And The Spur Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCEFGHG FIHIJKJ LJLJMNMN AOAOPQPQ RFSHS

The colours of the setting sunA
Withdrew across the Western landB
He raised the sliprails one by oneA
And shot them home with trembling handB
Her brown hands clung her face grew paleC
Ah quivering chin and eyes that brimD
One quick fierce kiss across the railC
And Good bye Mary ' Good bye Jim 'E
Oh he rides hard to race the painF
Who rides from love who rides from homeG
But he rides slowly home againH
Whose heart has learnt to love and roamG
-
A hand upon the horse's maneF
And one foot in the stirrup setI
And stooping back to kiss againH
With Good bye Mary don't you fretI
When I come back' he laughed for herJ
We do not know how soon 'twill beK
I'll whistle as I round the spurJ
You let the sliprails down for me '-
-
She gasped for sudden loss of hopeL
As with a backward wave to herJ
He cantered down the grassy slopeL
And swiftly round the dark'ning spurJ
Black pencilled panels standing highM
And darkness fading into starsN
And blurring fast against the skyM
A faint white form beside the barsN
-
And often at the set of sunA
In winter bleak and summer brownO
She'd steal across the little runA
And shyly let the sliprails downO
And listen there when darkness shutP
The nearer spur in silence deepQ
And when they called her from the hutP
Steal home and cry herself to sleepQ
-
-
-
Some editions have four more lines hereR
And he rides hard to dull the painF
Who rides from one that loves him bestS
And he rides slowly back againH
Whose restless heart must rove for restS
