I WISH I d never gone to boardA
In that house where I metB
The touring lady from abroadC
Who mocks my nightmares yetB
I wish I wish that she had savedD
Her news of what she d seenE
That Dan O Connor is clean shavedD
And parts his hair betweenE
-
The ladies down at Manly nowF
And widows understoodG
No more deplore their marriage vowF
Or hopeless widowhoodG
For Dan O Connor is the sameH
As though he d never beenI
Since Daniel shaved that shave of shameH
And combed his hair betweenE
-
No more Oh Bards in Danyel tonesJ
He ll voice our several famesJ
And nevermore he ll mix our bonesJ
As once he mixed our namesJ
Let Southern minstrels dree their weirdG
And lay their sad harps downK
For Dan O Connor s shorn of beardG
And cracked across the crownK
-
The lobby and refreshment roomL
Are shorn of half their larksJ
A newer ghost now haunts the gloomL
That knew the ghost of ParkesJ
The brightest joke Australia hadG
Is but a hopeless gruntG
It went for ever mad and badG
When Daniel shaved his frontG
-
The fair Spotswhoshky weeps indeedG
Frogsleggi and Bung LungM
With none to greet and none to speedG
Them in their native tongueM
By Sucklar Key nor Golden GateG
No Dan is ever seenE
Since Dan O Connor wiped his slateG
And notched his top betweenE
-
But Dan O Connor Lord knows bestG
The thing might be a sellN
You surely will forgive a jestG
From one who wished you wellN
When we ve forgot the face we fearedG
And Time has deadened painO
Oh Dan O Connor grow your beardG
And come to us againP
