I only woke this morningA
To find the world is fairB
I m going on for fortyC
With scarcely one grey hairB
I m going on for fortyC
Where man s strong life beginsD
With scarce a sign of crows feetE
In spite of all my sinsD
-
Then here s the living FortiesF
The Forties The FortiesF
Then here s the living FortiesF
We re good for ten years moreG
-
The teens were black and bitterH
A smothered boyhood s graveI
A farm drudge in the drought timeJ
A weary workshop slaveI
But twenty years have laid themK
And all the world is fairB
We ll find time in the FortiesF
To have some boyhood thereB
-
Then here s the wide free FortiesF
The Forties The FortiesF
Then here s the wide free FortiesF
We re good for ten years moreG
-
The twenties they were nobleL
The bravest years I thinkM
Twas man to man in troubleL
In working and in drinkM
Twas man to man in fightingA
For money or for praiseN
And we ll find in the FortiesF
Some more Bohemian daysN
-
Then here s the wiser FortiesF
The Forties The FortiesF
Then here s the wiser FortiesF
We re good for ten years moreG
-
The thirties were the fate yearsO
I fought behind the scenesP
The thirties were more cruelL
And blacker than the teensP
I held them not but bore themK
They were no years of mineQ
But they are going from meC
For I am thirty nineQ
-
So here s the stronger FortiesF
The Forties The FortiesF
And here s the good old FortiesF
We re good for ten years moreG
