A Renunciation Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCDEEFFGGGGHGIJ GGKKLLMNHHGGOO

We that did nothing study but the wayA
To love each other with which thoughts the dayA
Rose with delight to us and with them setB
Must learn the hateful art how to forgetB
We that did nothing wish that Heaven could giveC
Beyond ourselves nor did desire to liveD
Beyond that wish all these now cancel mustE
As if not writ in faith but words and dustE
Yet witness those clear vows which lovers makeF
Witness the chaste desires that never brakeF
Into unruly heats witness that breastG
Which in thy bosom anchor'd his whole restG
'Tis no default in us I dare acquiteG
Thy maiden faith thy purpose fair and whiteG
As thy pure self Cross planets did envyH
Us to each other and Heaven did untieG
Faster than vows could bind Oh that the starsI
When lovers meet should stand opposed in warsJ
-
Since then some higher Destinies commandG
Let us not strive nor labour to withstandG
What is past help The longest date of griefK
Can never yield a hope of our reliefK
Fold back our arms take home our fruitless lovesL
That must new fortunes try like turtle dovesL
Dislodg egrave d from their haunts We must in tearsM
Unwind a love knit up in many yearsN
In this last kiss I here surrender theeH
Back to thyself So thou again art freeH
Thou in another sad as that resendG
The truest heart that lover e'er did lendG
Now turn from each so fare our sever'd heartsO
As the divorced soul from her body partsO
