William Bede Dalley Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABACDEFE GHGH IJIK LHLH MNMN HHHH EOEP

That love of letters which is as the lightA
Of deathless verse intense ineffableB
Hath made this scholar s nature like the whiteA
Pure Roman soul of whom the poets tellC
He having lived so long with lords of thoughtD
The grand hierophants of speech and songE
Hath from the high august communion caughtF
Some portion of their inspiration strongE
-
The clear bright atmosphere through which he looksG
Is one by no dim close horizon boundH
The power shed as flame from noble booksG
Hath made for him a larger world aroundH
-
And he thus strengthened with the fourfold forceI
Which scholarship to genius gives is oneJ
That liberal thinkers pausing in their courseI
With fine esteem are glad to look uponK
-
He with the faultless intuition bornL
Of splendid faculties sees things arightH
And all his strong immeasurable scornL
Falls like a thunder on the hypocriteH
-
But for the sufferer and the son of shameM
On whom remorse a great sad burden liesN
His kindness glistens like a morning flameM
Immense compassion shines within his eyesN
-
Firm to the Church by which his fathers stoodH
But tolerant to every form of creedH
He longs for universal brotherhoodH
And is a Christian gentleman indeedH
-
These in his honour May his life be longE
And like a summer with a brilliant closeO
As full of music as a perfect songE
As radiant as a rich unhandled roseP
