William Bede Dalley Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABACDEFE GHGH IJIK LHLH MNMN HHHH EOEP| That love of letters which is as the light | A |
| Of deathless verse intense ineffable | B |
| Hath made this scholar s nature like the white | A |
| Pure Roman soul of whom the poets tell | C |
| He having lived so long with lords of thought | D |
| The grand hierophants of speech and song | E |
| Hath from the high august communion caught | F |
| Some portion of their inspiration strong | E |
| - | |
| The clear bright atmosphere through which he looks | G |
| Is one by no dim close horizon bound | H |
| The power shed as flame from noble books | G |
| Hath made for him a larger world around | H |
| - | |
| And he thus strengthened with the fourfold force | I |
| Which scholarship to genius gives is one | J |
| That liberal thinkers pausing in their course | I |
| With fine esteem are glad to look upon | K |
| - | |
| He with the faultless intuition born | L |
| Of splendid faculties sees things aright | H |
| And all his strong immeasurable scorn | L |
| Falls like a thunder on the hypocrite | H |
| - | |
| But for the sufferer and the son of shame | M |
| On whom remorse a great sad burden lies | N |
| His kindness glistens like a morning flame | M |
| Immense compassion shines within his eyes | N |
| - | |
| Firm to the Church by which his fathers stood | H |
| But tolerant to every form of creed | H |
| He longs for universal brotherhood | H |
| And is a Christian gentleman indeed | H |
| - | |
| These in his honour May his life be long | E |
| And like a summer with a brilliant close | O |
| As full of music as a perfect song | E |
| As radiant as a rich unhandled rose | P |
