THERE S music wafting on the airA
The evening winds are sighingB
Among the trees and yonder streamC
Is mournfully replyingB
Lamenting loud the sunny lightD
That in the west is dyingB

The moon is rising o er the hillE
Her slanting rays are creepingB
Where Nature lies profoundly stillE
In happy quiet sleepingB
And resting on her face they ll findF
The earth is wet with weepingB

She mourneth for the lovely dayG
Now deep in darkness shadedH
She sheds the dewy tear becauseI
Of morning s mantle fadedJ
She misses from her breast the garbK
In which the moon array d itL

The evening queen will strive in vainM
To break the spell which bound herN
A million stars can never throwO
Departed warmth around herN
They all must pass away and leaveP
The earth as they had found herN
-
But why should gentle Nature weepQ
That night has overtakenR
The wearied world that needed sleepQ
Refreshed to re awakenR
So richer light might burst aroundS
The gloomy shadows breakingB
-
Oh can she not from yonder skyT
That gleams above her borrowO
A single ray or find a wayG
To check the tear of sorrowO
A beam of hope would last her tillE
The dawning of to morrowO
