A HEAP of low dark rocky coastA
Unknown to foot or featherB
A sea voice moaning like a ghostA
And fits of fiery weatherB
-
The flying Syrinx turned and spedC
By dim mysterious hollowsD
Where night is black and day is redC
And frost the fire wind followsD
-
Strong heavy footfalls in the wakeE
Came up with flights of waterB
The gods were mournful for the sakeE
Of Ladon s lovely daughterB
-
For when she came to spike and spineF
Where reef and river gatherB
Her feet were sore with shell and chineF
She could not travel fartherB
-
Across a naked strait of landG
Blown sleet and surge were hummingH
But trammelled with the shifting sandG
She heard the monster comingH
-
A thing of hoofs and horns and lustI
A gaunt goat footed strangerB
She bowed her body in the dustI
And called on Zeus to change herB
-
And called on Hermes fair and fleetJ
And her of hounds and quiverB
To hide her in the thickets sweetJ
That sighed above the riverB
-
So he that sits on flaming wheelsK
And rules the sea and thunderB
Caught up the satyr by the heelsK
And tore his skirts asunderB
-
While Arcas of the glittering plumesL
Took Ladon s daughter lightlyM
And set her in the gracious gloomsL
That mix with moon mist nightlyM
-
And touched her lips with wild flower wineF
And changed her body slowlyM
Till in soft reeds of song and shineF
Her life was hidden whollyM
