Song Of The Shingle-splitters Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDAEAFAAAGHIH JKLKMNONPAQARSFH TUGUVAAAACACWHAH

IN dark wild woods where the lone owl broodsA
And the dingoes nightly yellB
Where the curlew s cry goes floating byC
We splitters of shingles dwellB
And all day through from the time of the dewD
To the hour when the mopoke callsA
Our mallets ring where the woodbirds singE
Sweet hymns by the waterfallsA
And all night long we are lulled by the songF
Of gales in the grand old treesA
And in the breaks we can hear the lakesA
And the moan of the distant seasA
For afar from heat and dust of streetG
And hall and turret and domeH
In forest deep where the torrents leapI
Is the shingle splitter s homeH
-
The dweller in town may lie upon downJ
And own his palace and parkK
We envy him not his prosperous lotL
Though we slumber on sheets of barkK
Our food is rough but we have enoughM
Our drink is better than wineN
For cool creeks flow wherever we goO
Shut in from the hot sunshineN
Though rude our roof it is weather proofP
And at the end of the daysA
We sit and smoke over yarn and jokeQ
By the bush fire s sturdy blazeA
For away from din and sorrow and sinR
Where troubles but rarely comeS
We jog along like a merry songF
In the shingle splitter s homeH
-
What though our work he heavy we shirkT
From nothing beneath the sunU
And toil is sweet to those who can eatG
And rest when the day is doneU
In the Sabbath time we hear no chimeV
No sound of the Sunday bellsA
But yet Heaven smiles on the forest aislesA
And God in the woodland dwellsA
We listen to notes from the million throatsA
Of chorister birds on highC
Our psalm is the breeze in the lordly treesA
And our dome is the broad blue skyC
Oh a brave frank life unsmitten by strifeW
We live wherever we roamH
And our hearts are free as the great strong seaA
In the shingle splitter s homeH
