Song Of The Shingle-splitters Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDAEAFAAAGHIH JKLKMNONPAQARSFH TUGUVAAAACACWHAH| IN dark wild woods where the lone owl broods | A |
| And the dingoes nightly yell | B |
| Where the curlew s cry goes floating by | C |
| We splitters of shingles dwell | B |
| And all day through from the time of the dew | D |
| To the hour when the mopoke calls | A |
| Our mallets ring where the woodbirds sing | E |
| Sweet hymns by the waterfalls | A |
| And all night long we are lulled by the song | F |
| Of gales in the grand old trees | A |
| And in the breaks we can hear the lakes | A |
| And the moan of the distant seas | A |
| For afar from heat and dust of street | G |
| And hall and turret and dome | H |
| In forest deep where the torrents leap | I |
| Is the shingle splitter s home | H |
| - | |
| The dweller in town may lie upon down | J |
| And own his palace and park | K |
| We envy him not his prosperous lot | L |
| Though we slumber on sheets of bark | K |
| Our food is rough but we have enough | M |
| Our drink is better than wine | N |
| For cool creeks flow wherever we go | O |
| Shut in from the hot sunshine | N |
| Though rude our roof it is weather proof | P |
| And at the end of the days | A |
| We sit and smoke over yarn and joke | Q |
| By the bush fire s sturdy blaze | A |
| For away from din and sorrow and sin | R |
| Where troubles but rarely come | S |
| We jog along like a merry song | F |
| In the shingle splitter s home | H |
| - | |
| What though our work he heavy we shirk | T |
| From nothing beneath the sun | U |
| And toil is sweet to those who can eat | G |
| And rest when the day is done | U |
| In the Sabbath time we hear no chime | V |
| No sound of the Sunday bells | A |
| But yet Heaven smiles on the forest aisles | A |
| And God in the woodland dwells | A |
| We listen to notes from the million throats | A |
| Of chorister birds on high | C |
| Our psalm is the breeze in the lordly trees | A |
| And our dome is the broad blue sky | C |
| Oh a brave frank life unsmitten by strife | W |
| We live wherever we roam | H |
| And our hearts are free as the great strong sea | A |
| In the shingle splitter s home | H |
