Grey Winter hath gone like a wearisome guestA
nbsp nbsp nbsp And behold for repaymentB
September comes in with the wind of the WestA
nbsp nbsp nbsp And the Spring in her raimentA
The ways of the frost have been filled of the flowersC
nbsp nbsp nbsp While the forest discoversC
Wild wings with the halo of hyaline hoursC
nbsp nbsp nbsp And the music of loversC
-
September the maid with the swift silver feetA
nbsp nbsp nbsp She glides and she gracesD
The valleys of coolness the slopes of the heatA
nbsp nbsp nbsp With her blossomy tracesE
Sweet month with a mouth that is made of a roseF
nbsp nbsp nbsp She lightens and lingersC
In spots where the harp of the evening glowsF
nbsp nbsp nbsp Attuned by her fingersC
-
The stream from its home in the hollow hill slipsG
nbsp nbsp nbsp In a darling old fashionH
And the day goeth down with a song on its lipsG
nbsp nbsp nbsp Whose key note is passionH
Far out in the fierce bitter front of the seaI
nbsp nbsp nbsp I stand and rememberJ
Dead things that were brothers and sisters of theeI
nbsp nbsp nbsp Resplendent SeptemberJ
-
The West when it blows at the fall of the noonK
nbsp nbsp nbsp And beats on the beachesE
Is filled with a tender and tremulous tuneK
nbsp nbsp nbsp That touches and teachesE
The stories of Youth of the burden of TimeL
nbsp nbsp nbsp And the death of DevotionH
Come back with the wind and are themes of the rhymeL
nbsp nbsp nbsp In the waves of the oceanH
-
We having a secret to others unknownM
nbsp nbsp nbsp In the cool mountain mossesE
May whisper together September aloneM
nbsp nbsp nbsp Of our loves and our lossesE
One word for her beauty and one for the graceN
nbsp nbsp nbsp She gave to the hoursC
And then we may kiss her and suffer her faceN
nbsp nbsp nbsp To sleep with the flowersC
-
Oh season of changes of shadow and shineO
nbsp nbsp nbsp September the splendidA
My song hath no music to mingle with thineO
nbsp nbsp nbsp And its burden is endedA
But thou being born of the winds and the sunH
nbsp nbsp nbsp By mountain by riverJ
Mayst lighten and listen and loiter and runH
nbsp nbsp nbsp With thy voices for everJ
