THE STRONG sob of the chafing streamA
That seaward fights its wayB
Down crags of glitter dells of gleamA
Is in the hills to dayB
-
But far and faint a grey winged formC
Hangs where the wild lights waneD
The phantom of a bygone stormC
A ghost of wind and rainD
-
The soft white feet of afternoonE
Are on the shining meadsF
The breeze is as a pleasant tuneE
Amongst the happy reedsF
-
The fierce disastrous flying fireG
That made the great caves ringH
And scarred the slope and broke the spireI
Is a forgotten thingH
-
The air is full of mellow soundsJ
The wet hill heads are brightK
And down the fall of fragrant groundsJ
The deep ways flame with lightK
-
A rose red space of stream I seeL
Past banks of tender fernM
A radiant brook unknown to meL
Beyond its upper turnM
-
The singing silver life I hearN
Whose home is in the greenO
Far folded woods of fountains clearP
Where I have never beenQ
-
Ah brook above the upper bendR
I often long to standS
Where you in soft cool shades descendR
From the untrodden landS
-
Ah folded woods that hide the graceT
Of moss and torrents strongU
I often wish to know the faceT
Of that which sings your songU
-
But I may linger long and lookV
Till night is over allW
My eyes will never see the brookV
Or sweet strange waterfallW
-
The world is round me with its heatX
And toil and cares that tireG
I cannot with my feeble feetX
Climb after my desireG
-
But on the lap of lands unseenO
Within a secret zoneY
There shine diviner gold and greenO
Than man has ever knownY
-
And where the silver waters singH
Down hushed and holy dellsT
The flower of a celestial SpringH
A tenfold splendour dwellsT
-
Yea in my dream of fall and brookV
By far sweet forests furledX
I see that light for which I lookV
In vain through all the worldX
-
The glory of a larger skyZ
On slopes of hills sublimeA2
That speak with God and morning highZ
Above the ways of TimeA2
-
Ah haply in this sphere of changeB2
Where shadows spoil the beamA
It would not do to climb that rangeB2
And test my radiant DreamA
-
The slightest glimpse of yonder placeT
Untrodden and aloneY
Might wholly kill that nameless graceT
The charm of the unknownY
-
And therefore though I look and longU
Perhaps the lot is brightX
Which keeps the river of the songU
A beauty out of sightX
