IT LIES amongst the sleeping stonesA
Far down the hidden mountain gladeB
And past its brink the torrent moansA
For ever in a dreamy shadeB
-
A little patch of dark green mossC
Whose softness grew of quiet waysD
With all its deep delicious flossE
In slumb rous suns of summer daysD
-
You know the place With pleasant tintsF
The broken sunset lights the bowersG
And then the woods are full with hintsF
Of distant dear voluptuous flowersG
-
Tis often now the pilgrim turnsH
A faded face towards that seatI
And cools his brow amongst the fernsH
The runnel dabbling at his feetI
-
There fierce December seldom goesJ
With scorching step and dust and drouthK
But soft and low October blowsJ
Sweet odours from her dewy mouthK
-
And Autumn like a gipsy boldL
Doth gather near it grapes and grainM
Ere Winter comes the woodman oldL
To lop the leaves in wind and rainM
-
O greenest moss of mountain glenN
The face of Rose is known to theeK
But we shall never share with menN
A knowledge dear to love and meK
-
For are they not between us savedO
The words my darling used to sayP
What time the western waters lavedO
The forehead of the fainting dayO
-
Cool comfort had we on your breastO
While yet the fervid noon burned muteO
O er barley field and barren crestO
And leagues of gardens flushed with fruitO
-
Oh sweet and low we whispered soQ
And sucked the pulp of plum and peachR
But it was many years agoQ
When each you know was loved of eachR
