Far down the hidden mountain glade | B |
And past its brink the torrent moans | A |
For ever in a dreamy shade | B |
- | |
A little patch of dark green moss | C |
Whose softness grew of quiet ways | D |
With all its deep delicious floss | E |
In slumb rous suns of summer days | D |

You know the place With pleasant tints | F |
The broken sunset lights the bowers | G |
And then the woods are full with hints | F |
Of distant dear voluptuous flowers | G |

Tis often now the pilgrim turns | H |
A faded face towards that seat | I |
And cools his brow amongst the ferns | H |
The runnel dabbling at his feet | I |
- | |
There fierce December seldom goes | J |
With scorching step and dust and drouth | K |
But soft and low October blows | J |
Sweet odours from her dewy mouth | K |

And Autumn like a gipsy bold | L |
Doth gather near it grapes and grain | M |
Ere Winter comes the woodman old | L |
To lop the leaves in wind and rain | M |
- | |
O greenest moss of mountain glen | N |
The face of Rose is known to thee | K |
But we shall never share with men | N |
A knowledge dear to love and me | K |
- | |
For are they not between us saved | O |
The words my darling used to say | P |
What time the western waters laved | O |
The forehead of the fainting day | O |
- | |
Cool comfort had we on your breast | O |
While yet the fervid noon burned mute | O |
O er barley field and barren crest | O |
And leagues of gardens flushed with fruit | O |
- | |
Oh sweet and low we whispered so | Q |
And sucked the pulp of plum and peach | R |
But it was many years ago | Q |
When each you know was loved of each | R |
