The gums in the gully stand gloomy and starkA
A torrent beneath them is leapingB
And the wind goes about like a ghost in the darkA
Where a chief of Wahibbi lies sleepingB
He dreams of a battle of foes of the pastC
But he hears not the whooping abroad on the blastC
Nor the fall of the feet that are travelling fastC
Oh why dost thou slumber KoorooraD
-
They come o'er the hills in their terrible ireD
And speed by the woodlands and waterD
They look down the hills at the flickering fireD
All eager and thirsty for slaughterD
Lo the stormy moon glares like a torch from the valeE
And a voice in the belah grows wild in its wailE
As the cries of the Wanneroos swell with the galeE
Oh rouse thee and meet them KoorooraD
-
He starts from his sleep and he clutches his spearD
And the echoes roll backward in wonderD
For a shouting strikes into the hollow woods nearD
Like the sound of a gathering thunderD
He clambers the ridge with his face to the lightF
The foes of Wahibbi come full in his sightF
The waters of Mooki will redden to nightF
Go and glory awaits thee KoorooraD
-
Lo yeelamans splinter and boomerangs clashG
And a spear through the darkness is drivenH
It whizzes along like a wandering flashG
From the heart of a hurricane rivenH
They turn to the mountains that gloomy browed bandI
The rain droppeth down with a moan to the landI
And the face of a chieftain lies buried in sandI
Oh the light that was quenched with KoorooraD
-
To morrow the Wanneroo dogs will rejoiceJ
And feast in this desolate valleyK
But where are his brothers the friends of his choiceJ
And why art thou absent EwalliK
Now silence draws back to the forest againL
And the wind like a wayfarer sleeps on the plainM
But the cheeks of a warrior bleach in the rainM
Oh where are thy mourners KoorooraD
