John Dunmore Lang Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCACADEDEFGFG FHFIJKJK LMLMLALA

The song that is last of the manyA
Whose music is full of thy nameB
Is weaker O father than anyA
Is fainter than flickering flameB
But far in the folds of the mountainsC
Whose bases are hoary with seaA
By lone immemorial fountainsC
This singer is mourning for theeA
Because thou wert chief and a giantD
With those who fought on for the rightE
A hero determined defiantD
As flame was the sleep of thy mightE
Like Stephen in days that are oldenF
Thy lot with a rabble was castG
But seasons came on that were goldenF
And Peace was thy mother at lastG
-
I knew of thy fierce tribulationF
Thou wert ever the same in my thoughtH
The father and friend of a nationF
Through good and through evil reportI
At Ephesus fighting in fettersJ
Paul drove the wild beasts to their penK
So thou with the lash of thy lettersJ
Whipped infamy back to its denK
-
The noise of thy battle is overL
Thy sword is hung up in its sheathM
Thy grave has been decked by its loverL
With beauty of willowy wreathM
The winds sing about thee for everL
The voices of hill and of seaA
But the cry of the conflict will neverL
Bring sorrow again unto theeA
