They come from the highways of labourA
From labour and leisure they comeB
But not to the sound of the taborC
And not to the beating of drumB
-
By thousands the people assembleD
With faces of shadow and flameE
And spirits that sicken and trembleD
Because of their sorrow and shameE
-
Their voice is the voice of a nationF
But lo it is muffled and muteG
For the sword of a strong tribulationF
Hath stricken their peace to the rootG
-
The beautiful tokens of pityH
Have utterly fled from their eyesI
For the demon who darkened the cityH
Is curst in the breaking of sighsI
-
Their thoughts are as one and togetherC
They band in their terrible ireJ
Like legions of wind in fierce weatherC
Whose footsteps are thunder and fireC
-
But for ever like springs of sweet waterC
That sings in the grass hidden leasK
As soft as the voice of a daughterC
There cometh a whisper from theseK
-
There cometh from shame and dejectionF
From wrath and the blackness thereofL
A word at whose heart is affectionF
With a sighing whose meaning is loveL
-
In the land of distress and of dangerC
With their foreheads in sackcloth and dustM
They weep for the wounds of the StrangerC
And mourn o'er the ashes of trustM
-
They weep for the Prince and the MotherC
Whose years have been smitten of griefN
For the son and the lord and the brotherC
And the widow the queen and the chiefN
-
But he having moved like a splendourC
Amongst them in happier daysO
With the grace that is manly and tenderC
And the kindness that passes all praiseO
-
Will think in the sickness and shadowP
Of greetings in forest and groveQ
And welcome in city and meadowP
Nor couple this sin with their loveL
-
For the sake of the touching devotionF
That sobs through the depths of their woeP
This son of the kings of the oceanF
As he came to them trusting will goP
