Where in a green moist myrtle dellA
The torrent voice rings strongB
And clear above a star bright wellA
I write this woodland songB
-
The melodies of many leavesC
Float in a fragrant zoneD
And here are flowers by deep mossed eavesC
That day has never knownD
-
I'll weave a garland out of theseE
The darlings of the birdsF
And send it over singing seasE
With certain sunny wordsF
-
With certain words alive with lightG
Of welcome for a thingH
Of promise born beneath the whiteG
Soft afternoon of SpringH
-
The faithful few have waited longB
A life like this to seeI
And they will understand the songB
That flows to day from meI
-
May every page within this bookJ
Be as a radiant hourK
Or like a bank of mountain brookJ
All flower and leaf and flowerK
-
May all the strength and all the graceL
Of Letters make it beamM
As beams a lawn whose lovely faceL
Is as a glorious dreamM
-
And may that strange divinityI
That men call Genius writeG
Some deathless thing in days to beI
To fill those days with lightG
-
Here where the free frank waters runN
I pray this book may growO
A sacred candour like the sunN
Above the morning snowO
-
May noble thoughts in faultless wordsF
In clean white diction makeP
It shine as shines the home of birdsF
And moss and leaf and lakeP
-
This fair fresh life with joy I hailQ
And this belief expressR
Its days will be a brilliant taleQ
Of effort and successR
-
Here ends my song I have a dreamM
Of beauty like the graceL
Which lies upon the land of streamM
In yonder mountain placeL
