The heart that once was rich with lightA
And happy in your graceB
Now lieth cold beneath the scornC
That gathers on your faceB
And every joy it knew beforeD
And every templed dreamE
Is paler than the dying flashF
On yonder mountain streamE
The soul regretting foundered blissG
Amid the wreck of yearsH
Hath mourned it with intensityI
Too deep for human tearsJ
-
The forest fadeth underneathK
The blast that rushes byL
The dripping leaves are white with deathM
But Love will never dieL
We both have seen the starry mossN
That clings where Ruin reignsO
And one must know his lonely breastP
Affection still retainsO
Through all the sweetest hopes of lifeQ
That clustered round and roundR
Are lying now like withered thingsS
Forsaken on the groundR
-
'Tis hard to think of what we wereT
And what we might have beenU
Had not an evil spirit creptV
Across the tranquil sceneW
Had fervent feelings in your soulX
Not failed nor ceased to shineY
As pure as those existing onZ
And burning still in mineY
Had every treasure at your feetA2
That I was wont to pourD
Been never thrown like worthless weedsB2
Upon a barren shoreD
-
The bitter edge of grief has passedC2
I would not now upbraidD2
Or count to you the broken vowsE2
So often idly madeD2
I would not cross your path to chaseB
The falsehood from your browF2
I know with all that borrowed lightA
You are not happy nowF2
Since those that once have trampled downG2
Affection's early claimH2
Have lost a peace they need not hopeI2
To find on earth againJ2
