Through many a fragrant cedar groveA
A darkened water moansB
And there pale Memory stood with LoveC
Amongst the moss green stonesB
The shimmering sunlight fell and kissedD
The grasstree s golden sheavesE
But we were troubled with a mistD
Of music in the leavesE
-
One passed us like a sudden gleamF
Her face was deadly fairG
Oh go we said you homeless DreamF
Of Ella s shining hairG
-
We halt like one with tired wingsH
And we would fain forgetI
That there are tempting maddening thingsH
Too high to clutch at yetI
-
Though seven Springs have filled the WoodJ
With pleasant hints and signsK
Since faltering feet went forth and stoodJ
With Death amongst the pinesK
-
From point to point unwittinglyL
We wish to clamber stillM
Till we have light enough to seeL
The summits of the hillM
-
O do not cry my sister dearN
Said beaming Hope to LoveC
Though we have been so troubled hereO
The Land is calm aboveC
-
Beyond the regions of the stormP
We ll find the golden gatesQ
Where all the day a radiant FormP
Our Ella sits and waitsQ
-
And Memory murmured She was oneR
Of God s own darlings lentS
And Angels wept that she had goneT
And wondered why she wentS
-
I know they came and talked to herU
Through every garden breezeV
About eternal Hills of MyrrhU
And quiet Jasper SeasV
-
For her the Earth contained no charmsW
All things were strange and wildX
And I believe a Seraph s armsW
Caught up the sainted ChildX
-
And Love looked round and said Oh youY
That sit by Beulah s streamsZ
Shake on this thirsty life the dewY
Which brings immortal dreamsZ
-
Ah turn to us and greet us oftA2
With looks of pitying balmB2
And hints of heaven in whispers softC2
To make our troubles calmB2
-
My Ella with the shining hairG
Behold these many yearsD2
We ve held up wearied hands in prayerG
And groped about in tearsE2
-
But Hope sings on Beyond the stormP
We ll find the golden gatesQ
Where all the day a radiant FormP
Our Ella sits and waitsQ
