Australian War Song Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCDEFEFBBBBEBEB EGEGHEHECICJ EBEBKEKEGLGLKBKB

Men have said that ye were sleepingA
Hurl Australians back the lieB
Whet the swords you have in keepingA
Forward stand to do or dieB
Hear ye not across the oceanC
Echoes of the distant frayD
Sounds of loud and fierce commotionC
Swiftly sweeping on the wayD
Hearts have woke from sluggish trancesE
Woke to know their native worthF
Freedom with her train advancesE
Freedom newly sprung to birthF
Despots start from thrones affrightedB
Tyrants hear the angry treadB
Where the slaves whose prayers were slightedB
Marching draw the sword insteadB
If the men of other nationsE
Dash their fetters to the groundB
When the foeman seeks your stationsE
Will you willing slaves be foundB
You the sons of hero fathersE
Sires that bled at WaterlooG
No Your indignation gathersE
To your old traditions trueG
Should the cannon s iron rattleH
Sound between your harbour doorsE
You will rise to wage the battleH
In a just and righteous causeE
Patriot fires will scorch OppressionC
Should it dare to draw too nearI
And the tide of bold AggressionC
Must be stayed from coming hereJ
-
Look upon familiar placesE
Mountain river hill and gladeB
Look upon those beauteous facesE
Turning up to you for aidB
Think ye in the time of dangerK
When that threatening moment comesE
Will ye let the heartless strangerK
Drive your kindred from their homesE
By the prayers which rise above youG
When you face him on the shoreL
By the forms of those that love youG
Greet him with the rifle s roarL
While an arm can wield a sabreK
While you yet can lift a handB
Strike and teach your hostile neighbourK
This is Freedom s chosen landB
