Aboriginal Death Song Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDED FGFG HIHI JKJK BLBM NONO PLPL QRQR STUT

Feet of the flying and fierceA
Tops of the sharp headed spearB
Hard by the thickets that pierceA
Lo they are nimble and nearB
Women are we and the wivesC
Strong Arrawatta hath wonD
Weary because of our livesE
Sick of the face of the sunD
-
Koola our love and our lightF
What have they done unto youG
Man of the star reaching sightF
Dipped in the fire and the dewG
-
Black headed snakes in the grassH
Struck at the fleet footed lordI
Still is his voice at the passH
Soundless his step at the fordI
-
Far by the forested glenJ
Starkly he lies in the rainK
Kings of the council of menJ
Shout for their leader in vainK
-
Yea and the fish river clearB
Never shall blacken belowL
Spear and the shadow of spearB
Bow and the shadow of bowM
-
Hunter and climber of treesN
Now doth his tomahawk rustO
Dread of the cunning wild beesN
Hidden in hillocks of dustO
-
We who were followed and boundP
Dashed under foot by the foeL
Sit with our eyes to the groundP
Faint from the brand and the blowL
-
Dumb with the sorrow that killsQ
Sorrow for brother and chiefR
Terror of thundering hillsQ
Having no hope in our griefR
-
Seeing the fathers are farS
Seeking the spoils of the deadT
Left on the path of the warU
Matted and mangled and redT
