Beetling rock with roar and smokeA
Break before my hammer strokeA
Deeper I must thrust and lowerB
Till I hear the ring of oreC
-
From the mountain's unplumbed nightD
Deep amid the gold veins brightD
Diamonds lure me rubies beckonE
Treasure hoard that none may reckonE
-
There is peace within the deepF
Peace and immemorial sleepF
Heavy hammer burst as biddenG
To the heart nook of the hiddenE
-
Once I too a careless ladH
Under starry heavens was gladH
Trod the primrose paths of summerB
Child like knew not care nor cummerB
-
But I lost the sense of lightD
In the poring womb of nightD
Woodland songs when earth rejoiced herB
Breathed not down my hollow cloisterB
-
Fondly did I cry when firstI
Into the dark place I burstI
Answer spirits of the middleJ
Earth my life's unending riddleJ
-
Still the spirits of the deepF
Unrevealed their answer keepF
Still no beam from out the gloomyK
Cavern rises to illume meK
-
Have I erred Does this way leadL
Not to clarity indeedM
If above I seek to find itN
By the glare my eyes are blindedO
-
Downward then the depths are bestP
There is immemorial restP
Heavy hammer burst as biddenG
To the heart nook of the hiddenE
-
Hammer blow on hammer blowQ
Till the lamp of life is lowQ
Not a ray of hope's fore warningR
Not a glimmer of the morningR
