With far flung shadow veil | B |
A cloud sea laps the precipice | C |
Before the evening gale | B |
The welter of the cloud waves grey | D |
Cuts off from keenest sight | E |
The glacier looking out by day | D |
O'er all the district far away | D |
And crowned with golden light | E |

A home of shining peace | H |
The mountain eagle seems to sail | B |
A ship far seen at even | I |
And over all a serried pale | B |
Of peaks like giants ranked in mail | B |
Fronts westward threatening heaven | J |

But look a steading nestles close | K |
Beneath the ice fields bound | L |
Where purple cliffs and glittering snows | M |
The quiet home surround | L |
Here place and people seem to be | N |
A world apart alone | O |
Cut off from men by spate and scree | D |

A sunshine all its own | O |

Look mute the saeter maiden stays | P |
Half shadow half aflame | Q |
The deep still vision of her gaze | P |
Was never word to name | Q |
She names it not herself nor knows | M |
What goal my be its will | R |
While cow bells chime and alp horn blows | M |
It bears her where the sunset glows | M |
Or maybe further still | R |

Too brief thy life on highland wolds | M |
Where close the glaciers jut | S |
Too soon the snowstorm's cloak enfolds | M |
Stone byre and pine log hut | S |
Then wilt thou ply with hearth ablaze | M |
The winter's well worn tasks | M |
But spin thy wool with cheerful face | M |
One sunset in the mountain pays | M |
For all their winter asks | M |
