Mountain Life Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEDDE FGFHBIBBJ KLMLNODDO PQPQMRMMR MSMSMMMMM

IN summer dusk the valley liesA
With far flung shadow veilB
A cloud sea laps the precipiceC
Before the evening galeB
The welter of the cloud waves greyD
Cuts off from keenest sightE
The glacier looking out by dayD
O'er all the district far awayD
And crowned with golden lightE
-
But o'er the smouldering cloud wrack's flowF
Where gold and amber kissG
Stands up the archipelagoF
A home of shining peaceH
The mountain eagle seems to sailB
A ship far seen at evenI
And over all a serried paleB
Of peaks like giants ranked in mailB
Fronts westward threatening heavenJ
-
But look a steading nestles closeK
Beneath the ice fields boundL
Where purple cliffs and glittering snowsM
The quiet home surroundL
Here place and people seem to beN
A world apart aloneO
Cut off from men by spate and screeD
It has a heaven more broad more freeD
A sunshine all its ownO
-
Look mute the saeter maiden staysP
Half shadow half aflameQ
The deep still vision of her gazeP
Was never word to nameQ
She names it not herself nor knowsM
What goal my be its willR
While cow bells chime and alp horn blowsM
It bears her where the sunset glowsM
Or maybe further stillR
-
Too brief thy life on highland woldsM
Where close the glaciers jutS
Too soon the snowstorm's cloak enfoldsM
Stone byre and pine log hutS
Then wilt thou ply with hearth ablazeM
The winter's well worn tasksM
But spin thy wool with cheerful faceM
One sunset in the mountain paysM
For all their winter asksM
