ON SAINT HELEN'S DAYA
-
-
DEAR Boys dismiss'd awhile from schoolB
From sober learning's thorny ruleB
The annual race of glory runC
The prize bestow'd the laurels wonC
Ye leave the scientific domeD
While noisy rapture hails your homeD
Home cherish'd spot whose magic powerE
Can charm with hope the studious hourE
And where the heart however farF
Points like the needle to its starF
-
And now with many a fond orationC
Ye ask to crown this dear vacationC
Saturnian time of sport and playA
A F TE to grace SAINT HELEN'S DAYA
But will the Saint propitious seeG
A F te dear Boys prepar'd for meG
I who her altar never soughtH
An heretic who idly thoughtH
She liv'd alone in pagan fameI
And half forgot her sainted nameI
But since that name entwin'd with palmsJ
The legend's deathless page embalmsJ
And since historic truth must ownK
Her crested votary fill'd a throneK
We'll lay our offerings at her shrineL
And call her as she is divineL
Then haste dear Boys and deck the bowersJ
This chosen day with festive flowersJ
The votive bouquet joyful bringM
And bid your muse on lofty wingM
-
The steep Parnassian summits climbN
And weave the tributary rhymeN
The soothing song which ye rehearseJ
Though form'd of perishable verseJ
And like the bouquet born to dieO
Shall fill with tears affection's eyeO
Shall touch with eloquence confestO
The chords which vibrate in her breastO
Then hither bring the early friendO
With whom your bounding hearts unbendO
Till then in vain the F te preparedO
What F te unless by friendship shar'dO
Together happy band advanceJ
Together frame the sportive danceJ
Together tread the mimic stageP
The TALMAS of another ageP
And then to crown this favor'd nightO
Unquestion'd symbol of delightO
The soaring rocket swift shall riseJ
And sweeping gild the midnight skiesJ
-
Bright wheels of fire shall rapid turnQ
And suns that soon must set shall burnQ
SAINT HELEN with a smile shall viewR
Her rites all paid in order dueR
The Saint become my patron nowS
To her and you I breathe my vowS
Listen dear Boys nor take amissJ
A lesson with a parting kissJ
Your life has clos'd its baby spanT
And childhood ripens into manT
On youth's gay threshold now ye treadO
The path unfolds with roses spreadO
That leads the unsuspecting guestO
Where Pleasure holds her Circean feastO
With bosoms yet from evil freeG
Now promise to the Saint and meG
Oft as the years on circling wingM
This fond returning day shall bringM
While o'er the world ye lightly roamD
Far from the long lost scene of homeD
-
This day in Pleasure's course to pauseJ
This day let Reason plead her causeJ
When come the years for come they mustO
When her ye love is laid in dustO
Her who for you has learn'd to proveU
A mother's care a mother's loveV
From you all ill has sought to chaseJ
And fill a mother's vacant placeJ
Still on this day to duty trueR
Remember that she liv'd for youR
Ah give her one recording sighO
Nor pass this day with tearless eyeO
Still may its chosen hours impartO
The throb of virtue to the heartO
And be the talisman whose spellW
Shall Passion's wild delirium quellW
Controul with some good angel's powerE
Seduction in her smiling hourE
This day from all her wiles secureX
With nobler hopes with purpose pureX
-
Resolve to feel that best delightO
Reserv'd for those who live arightO
And thus dear Boys your tribute payA
Thus consecrate SAINT HELEN'S DAYA
