To Mrs. Montagu Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDED FGFG HIHI BJBK LMLM NONO PQPQ CRCR SGSG MTMU

While bending at thy honour'd shrine the MuseA
Pours MONTAGU to thee her votive strainB
Thy heart will not her simple notes refuseA
Or chill her timid soul with cold disdainB
-
O might a transient spark of genius fireC
The fond effusions of her fearful youthD
Then should thy virtues live upon her lyreE
And give to harmony the charm of truthD
-
Vain wish they ask not the imperfect layF
The weak applause her trembling accents breatheG
With whose pure radiance glory blends her rayF
Whom fame has circled with her fairest wreatheG
-
Thou who while seen with graceful step to treadH
Grandeur's enchanted round can'st meekly pauseI
To rend the veil obscurity had spreadH
Where his lone sigh deserted Genius drawsI
-
To lead his drooping spirit to thy faneB
Where attic joy the social circle warmsJ
Where science loves to pour her hallow'd strainB
Where wit and wisdom blend their sep'rate charmsK
-
And lure to cherish intellectual powersL
To bid the vig'rous tides of genius rollM
Unfold in fair expansion fancy's flowersL
And wake the latent energies of soulM
-
Far other homage claims than flatt'ry bringsN
The little triumphs of the proud to graceO
For deeds like these a purer incense springsN
Warm from the swelling heart its source we traceO
-
Yet not to foster the rich gifts of mindP
Alone can all thy lib'ral cares employQ
Not to the few those gifts adorn confin'dP
They spread an ampler sphere of genuine joyQ
-
While pleasure's lucid star illumes thy bowerC
Thy pity views the distant storm that bendsR
Where want unshelter'd wastes the ling'ring hourC
And meets the blessing that to heav'n ascendsR
-
For this while fame thro' each successive ageS
On her exulting lip thy name shall breatheG
While woman pointing to thy finish'd pageS
Claims from imperious man the critic wreatheG
-
Truth on her spotless record shall enrollM
Each moral beauty to her spirit dearT
Paint in bright characters each grace of soulM
While admiration pours a gen'rous tearU
