WHICH HE HAD PRESERVED BY MEANS OF | B |
AN INGENIOUS PROCESS IN THEIR | C |
ORIGINAL BEAUTY | D |

SWEET spoils of consecrated bowers | E |
How dear to me these chosen flowers | E |
I love the simplest bud that blows | F |
I love the meanest weed that grows | F |
Symbols of nature every form | G |
That speaks of her this heart can warm | G |
But ye delicious flowers assume | H |
In fancy's eye a brighter bloom | H |
A dearer pleasure ye diffuse | I |
Cull'd by the fountain of Vaucluse | I |
- | |
For ye were nurtur'd on the sod | J |
Where PETRARCH mourn'd and LAURA trod | J |
Ye grew on that inspiring ground | K |
Where love has shed enchantment round | K |
Where still the tear of passion flows | I |
Fond tribute to a poet's woes | I |
Yet cherish'd flowers with love and fame | L |
This wreath entwines a milder name | L |
Friendship who better knows than they | M |
The spells that smooth our length'ning way | M |
Friendship the blooming off'ring brought | N |
When FORBES the classic fountain sought | N |
For me he cull'd the fresh blown flowers | I |
And fix'd their hues with potent powers | I |
Their pliant forms with skilful care | C |
He seized and stamp'd duration there | C |
His gift shall ever glad the eye | O |
Nor like my verse is born to die | O |
