The Scotch Ballad Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH IJIK LMLM NONO PCQC

Ah EVAN by thy winding streamA
How once I lov'd to strayB
And view the morning's redd'ning beamA
Or charm of closing dayB
-
To yon dear grot by EVAN'S sideC
How oft my steps were ledD
Where far beneath the waters glideC
And thick the woods are spreadD
-
But I no more a charm can seeE
In EVAN'S lovely gladesF
And drear and desolate to meE
Are those enchanting shadesF
-
While far how far from EVAN'S bowersG
My wand'ring lover fliesH
Where dark the angry tempest lowersG
And high the billows riseH
-
And O where'er the wand'rer goesI
Is that poor mourner dearJ
Who gives while soft the EVAN flowsI
Each passing wave a tearK
-
And does he now that grotto viewL
On those steep banks still gazeM
In fancy does he still pursueL
The EVAN'S lovely mazeM
-
O come repass the stormy waveN
O toil for gold no moreO
Our love a dearer pleasure gaveN
On EVAN'S peaceful shoreO
-
Leave not my breaking heart to mournP
The joys so long deniedC
Ah soon to those green banks returnQ
Where EVAN meets the CLYDEC
