WHEN fading Autumn's latest hoursA
Strip the brown wood and chill the flowersA
When evening wint'ry short and paleB
Expires in many a hollow galeB
And only morn herself looks gayC
When first she throws her quiv'ring rayC
Where the light frost congeals the dewD
Flushing the turf with purple hueD
Gay bloom whose transient glow can shedE
A charm like Summer when 'tis fledE
A Linnet among leafless treesF
Sung in the pauses of the breezeF
-
His farewell note to fancy dearG
That ends the music of the yearG
The short'ning day the sadd'ning skyH
With frost and famine low'ring nighH
The Summer's dirge he seem'd to singI
And droop'd his elegiac wingI
Poor Bird he read amiss his fateJ
Nor saw the horrors of his stateJ
A prowling Cat with jetty skinK
Dark emblem of the mind withinK
Who feels no sympathetic painL
Who hears unmov'd the sweetest strainL
Fit but 'for stratagem and spoil '-
Mischief his pleasure and his toilM
Drew near and shook the wither'd leavesN
The Linnet's flutt'ring bosom heavesN
Alarm'd he hears the rustling soundO
He starts he pauses looks aroundO
Too late more near the savage drawsP
And grasps the victim in his jawsP
-
The Linnet's muse a tim'rous maidQ
Saw and to Molly scream'd for aidQ
A tear then fill'd her earnest eyeH
Useless as dews on desarts lieH
But Molly's pity fell like showersA
That feed the plants and wake the flowersA
Heroic Molly dauntless flewD
And scorning all his claws could doD
Snatch'd from Grimalkin's teeth his preyC
And bore him in her breast awayC
His beating heart and wings declareR
How small his hope of safety thereR
Still the dire foe he seem'd to seeS
And scarce could fancy he was freeS
Awhile he cow'rd on Molly's breastT
Then upward sprung and sought his nestT
Dear Molly for thy tender speedU
Thy fearless pity's gentle deedU
-
A ribbon garland 'rosy red '-
My votive gift shall deck thy headE
That garland at the village fairR
Shalt thou dear maid in triumph wearR
And may the blooming wreath obtainL
The youth thy heart desires to gainL
And thou sweet Bird whom rapture fillsV
Who feel'st no sense of future illsV
That sense which human peace destroysW
And murders all our present joysW
Still soothe with song th' autumnal hoursA
And when the wint'ry tempest lowersA
When snow thy shiv'ring plumes shall fillX
And icicles shall load thy billX
Come fearless to my friendly shedE
This careful hand the crumbs shall spreadE
Then peck secure these watchful eyesY
Shall guard my Linnet from surpriseY
