AH Love ere yet I knew thy fatal powerB
Bright glow'd the colour of my youthful daysC
As on the sultry zone the torrid raysC
That paint the broad leav'd plantain's glossy bowerB
Calm was my bosom as this silent hourB
When o'er the deep scarce heard the zephyr straysC
'Midst the cool tamarinds indolently playsC
Nor from the orange shakes its od'rous flowerB
But ah since Love has all my heart possestD
That desolated heart what sorrows tearE
Disturb'd and wild as ocean's troubled breastD
When the hoarse tempest of the night is thereE
Yet my complaining spirit asks no restD
This bleeding bosom cherishes despairE
