Description of Peru and of its Productions Virtues of the PeopleA
and of their Monarch ATALIBA His love for ALZIRA Their NupB
tials celebrated Character of ZORAI her Father Descent of theC
Genius of Peru Prediction of the Fall of that EmpireD

Where the Pacific deep in silence lavesE
The western shore with slow and languid wavesE
There lost PERUVlA bloom'd thy cultur'd bowersE
Thy vallies fragrant with perennial flowersE
There far above the Pine unbending roseE
Along the pathway of thy mountain snowsE
The Palms fling high in air their feather'd headsE
While each broad leaf an ample shadow spreadsE
The Orange and the rich Ananas bloomF
And humid Balsams ever shed perfumeF
The Bark reviving shrub Ah not in vainG
Thy rosy blossoms tinge PERUVIA'S plainG
Ye fost'ring gales around those blossoms blowH
Ye balmy dew drops o'er the tendrils flowH
Lo as the health diffusing plant aspiresE
Disease relents and hov'ring death retiresE
Affection sees new lustre light the eyeI
And feels her vanish'd peace again is nighI
The Pacas and Vicunnas sport aroundJ
And the meek Lamas burden'd press the groundJ
The Mocking bird his varying note essaysE
And charms the grove with imitative laysE
The plaintive Humming bird unfolds his wingK
Of vivid plumage to the ray of springK
Then sinks soft burthen on the humid flowerD
His food the dewdrops of the morning hourD
-
Nor less PERUVIA for thy favour'd climeF
The Virtues rose unsullied and sublimeF
There melting Charity with ardour warmF
Spreads her wide mantle o'er the shiv'ring formF
Cheer'd with the festal song her rural toilsE
While in the lap of age she pour'd the spoilsE
There the mild Inca ATALIBA sway'dL
His high behest the willing heart obey'dL
Descendant of a scepter'd sacred raceE
Whose origin from glowing suns they traceE
Love's soft emotions now his soul possestL
And fix'd ALZIRA'S image in his breastL
In that blest clime affection never knewM
A selfish purpose or a thought untrueM
Not as on Europe's shore where wealth and prideL
From mourning love the venal breast divideL
Yet Love if there from sordid shackles freeN
One faithful bosom yet belongs to theeN
On that fond heart the purest bliss bestowL
Or give for thou canst give a charm to woeL
Ah never may that heart in vain deploreO
The pang that tortures when belov'd no moreO
And from that agony the spirit saveP
When unrelenting yawns th' untimely graveP
When death dissolves the ties for ever dearQ
When frantic passion pours her parting tearR
With all the wasting pains she only feelsE
Hangs on the quiv'ring lip that silence sealsE
Views fondness struggling in the closing eyeI
And marks it mingling in the falt'ring sighI
As the lov'd form while folded to her breastL
Breathes the last moan that gives its struggles restL
Leaves her to pine in grief that none can shareR
And find the world a desert to despairR
Bright was the lustre of the orient rayS
That joyful wak'd ALZIRA'S nuptial dayS
Her auburn hair spread loosely on the windL
The virgin train with rosy chaplets bindL
While the fresh flowers that form her bridal wreatheN
Seem deeper hues and richer scents to breatheN
The gentle tribe now sought the hallow'd faneG
Where warbling vestals pour'd the choral strainG
There aged ZORAI his ALZIRA prestL
With love parental to his anxious breastL
Priest of the Sun within the sacred shrineT
His fervent spirit breath'd the strain divineT
With careful hand the guiltless off'ring spreadL
With pious zeal the clear libation shedL
Nor vain the incense of erroneous praiseE
When meek devotion's soul the tribute paysE
On wings of purity behold it riseE
While bending mercy wafts it to the skiesE
PERUVIA O delightful land in vainG
The virtues flourish'd on thy beauteous plainG
For soon shall burst the unrelenting stormF
O'er thy mild head and crush thy prostrate formF
Recording Fame shall mark thy desp'rate fateL
And distant ages weep for ills so greatL
-
Now o'er the deep dull Night her mantle flungU
Dim on the wave the moon's faint crescent hungU
PERUVIA'S Genius sought the liquid plainG
Sooth'd by the languid murmurs of the mainG
When sudden clamour the illusion brokeV
Wild on the surface of the deep it spokeV
A rising breeze expands her flowing veilW
Aghast with fear she spies a flying sailW
The lofty mast impends the banner wavesE
The ruffled surge th' incumbent vessel lavesE
With eager eye she views her destin'd foeL
Lead to her peaceful shores th' advent'rous prowX
Trembling she knelt with wild disorder'd airR
And pour'd with frantic energy her prayerR
O ye avenging spirits of the deepB
Mount the blue lightning's wing o'er ocean sweepB
Loud from your central caves the shell resoundL
That summons death to your abyss profoundL
Call the pale spectre from his dark abodeL
To print the billow swell the black'ning floodL
Rush o'er the waves the rough'ning deep deformF
Howl in the blast and animate the stormF
Relentless powers for not one quiv'ring breezeE
Has ruffled yet the surface of the seasE
Swift from your rocky steeps ye Condors strayS
Wave your black plumes and cleave th' aerial wayS
Proud in terrific force your wings expandL
Press the firm earth and darken all the strandL
Bid the stern foe retire with wild affrightL
And shun the region veil'd in partial nightL
Vain hope devoted land I read thy doomF
My sad prophetic soul can pierce the gloomF
I see I see my lov'd my favour'd climeF
Consum'd and wasted in its early primeF
But not in vain this beauteous land shall bleedL
Too late shall Europe's race deplore the deedL
Region abhorr'd be gold the tempting baneG
The curse that desolates thy hostile plainG
May pleasure tinge with venom'd drops the bowlY
And luxury unnerve the sick'ning soulY
Ah not in vain she pour'd th' impassion'd tearR
Ah not in vain she call'd the powers to hearZ
When borne from lost PERUVIA'S bleeding landL
The guilty treasures beam'd on Europe's strandL
Each sweet affection fled the tainted shoreO
And virtue wander'd to return no moreO
