CANTO THE SECONDD
-
Flush'd with impatient hope the martial bandE
By stern Pizarro led approach the landE
No terrors arm the hostile brow for guileF
Charms to betray in Candour's open smileF
Too artless for distrust the monarch springsG
To meet his latent foe on friendship's wingsG
On as he moves with glitt'ring splendours crown'dH
His feather'd chiefs the golden throne surroundH
The waving canopy its plume displaysI
Whose varied hues reflect the morning raysI
With native grace he hails the warrior trainJ
Who stood majestic on Peruvia's plainJ
In all the savage pomp of armour drestH
The radiant helmet and the nodding crestH
Yet themes of joy Pizarro's lips impartH
And charm with eloquence the simple heartH
Unfolding to the monarch's wond'ring thoughtH
All that inventive arts the rude have taughtH
And now he bids the purer spirit riseK
Above the circle of surrounding skiesK
Presents the page that shed religion's lightH
O'er the dark mist of intellectual nightH
While thrill'd with awe the monarch trembling standsL
He dropp'd the hallow'd volume from his handsL
-
A Sudden while frantic zeal each breast inspiresM
And shudd'ring demons fan the impious firesN
The bloody signal waves the banners playO
The naked sabres flash their streaming rayO
The martial trumpet's animating soundH
And thund'ring cannon rend the vault aroundH
While fierce in sanguine rage the sons of SpainJ
Rush on Peru's unarm'd devoted trainJ
The fiends of slaughter urg'd their dire careerP
And virtue's guardian spirits dropp'd a tearQ
Mild Zorai fell deploring human strifeR
And clos'd with prayer his consecrated lifeR
In vain Peruvia's chiefs undaunted stoodH
Shield their lov'd prince and bathe his robes in bloodH
Touch'd with heroic ardor rush aroundH
And high of soul receive each fatal woundH
Dragg'd from his throne and hurry'd o'er the plainJ
The wretched monarch swells the captive trainJ
With iron grasp the frantic prince they bearQ
And bless the omen of his wild despairQ
-
Deep in the gloomy dungeon's lone domainJ
Lost Ataliba wore the galling chainJ
The earth's cold bed refus'd oblivious restH
While throb'd the pains of thousands at his breastH
Alzira's desolating moan he hearsS
And with the monarch's blends the lover's tearsT
Soon had Alzira felt affliction's dartH
Pierce her soft soul and rend her bleeding heartH
Its quick pulsations paus'd and chill'd with dreadH
A livid hue her fading cheek o'erspreadH
No tear she gave to love she breath'd no sighU
Her lips were mute and clos'd her languid eyeU
Fainter and slower heav'd her shiv'ring breastH
And her calm'd passions seem'd in death to restH
At length reviv'd mid rising heaps of slainJ
She prest with trembling step the crimson plainJ
The dungeon's gloomy depth she fearless soughtH
For love with scorn of danger arm'd her thoughtH
The cell that holds her captive lord she gainsV
Her tears fall quiv'ring on a lover's chainsV
Too tender spirit check the filial tearQ
A sympathy more soft a tie more dearP
Shall claim the drops that frantic passion shedsW
When the rude storm its darkest pinion spreadsW
Lo bursting the deep cell where mis'ry layO
The human vultures seize the dove like preyO
In vain her treasur'd wealth Peruvia gaveX
This dearer treasure from their grasp to saveX
Alzira lo the ruthless murd'rers comeY
This moment seals thy Ataliba's doomZ
Ah what avails the shriek that anguish poursA2
The look that mercy's lenient aid imploresA2
Torn from thy clinging arms thy throbbing breastH
The fatal cord his agony supprestH
In vain the livid corse she fondly claspsA2
And pours her sorrows o'er the form she graspsA2
The murd'rers now their struggling victim tearQ
From the lost object of her keen despairQ
The swelling pang unable to sustainJ
Distraction throbb'd in every beating veinJ
Its sudden tumults seize her yielding soulB2
And in her eye distemper'd glances rollB2
They come the mourner cried with panting breathC2
To give the lost Alzira rest in deathC2
One moment more ye bloody forms bestowH
One moment more for ever cures my woeH
Lo where the purple evening sheds her lightH
On blest remains oh hide them pitying nightH
Slow in the breeze I see the verdure waveX
That shrouds with tufted grass my lover's graveX
There on its wand'ring wing in mildness blowsA2
The mournful gale nor wakes his deep reposeA2
And see yon hoary form still lingers thereQ
Dishevell'd by rude winds his silver hairQ
O'er his chill'd bosom falls the winter's rainJ
I feel the big drops on my wither'd brainJ
Not for himself that tear his bosom steepsA2
For his lost child it flows for me he weepsA2
No more the dagger's point shall pierce thy breastH
For calm and lovely is thy silent restH
Yet still in dust these eyes shall see thee rollB2
Still the sad thought shall waste Alzira's soulB2
What bleeding phantom moves along the stormD2
It is it is my lover's well known formD2
Tho' the dim moon is veil'd his robes of lightH
Tinge the dark clouds and gild the mist of nightH
Approach Alzira's breast no terrors moveE2
Her fears are all for ever lost in loveF2
Safe on the hanging cliff I now can restH
And press its pointed pillow to my breastH
He weeps in heav'n he weeps I feel his tearQ
It chills my trembling heart yet still 'tis dearP
To him all joyless are the realms aboveF2
That pale look speaks of pity and of loveF2
My love ascends he soars in azure lightH
Stay tender spirit cruel stay thy flightH
Again descend in yonder rolling cloudH
And veil Alzira in thy misty shroudH
He comes my love has plac'd the dagger nearP
And on its hallow'd point has dropp'd a tearQ
As roll'd her wand'ring glances wide aroundH
She snatch'd a reeking sabre from the groundH
Firmly her lifted hand the weapon press'dH
And deep she plung'd it in her panting breastH
'Tis but a few short moments that divideH
Alzira from her love she said and diedH
-
A Sudden while frantic zeal c PIZARRO who during a long conference had with difficulty restrained his soldiers eager to seize the rich spoils of which they had now so near a view immediately gave the signal of assault At once the martial music struck up the cannon and muskets began to fire the horse sallied out fiercely to the charge the infantry rushed on sword in hand The Peruvians astonished at the suddenness of an attack which they did not expect and dismayed with the destructive effects of the fire arms fled with universal consternation on every side PIZARRO at the head of his chosen band advanced directly towards the Inca and though his Nobles crowded around him with officious zeal and fell in numbers at his feet while they vied one with another in sacrificing their own lives that they might cover the sacred person of their Sovereign the Spaniards soon penetrated to the royal seat and PIZARRO seizing the Inca by the arm dragged him to the ground and carried him a prisoner to his quarters Robertson's History of AmericaG2
