Rise winds of night relentless tempests riseB
Rush from the troubled clouds and o'er me rollC
In this chill pause a deeper horror liesB
A wilder fear appals my shudd'ring soulC
'Twas on this day this hour accurstD
That Nature starting from reposeE
Heard the dire shrieks of murder burstD
From infant innocence they roseE
And shook these solemn towersF
I shudd'ring pass that fatal roomG
For ages wrapt in central gloomG
I shudd'ring pass that iron doorH
Which fate perchance unlocks no moreH
Death smear'd with blood o'er the dark portal lowersF

How fearfully my step resoundsF
Along these lonely boundsF
Spare savage blast the taper's quiv'ring firesF
Deep in these gath'ring shades its flame expiresF
Ye host of heaven the door recedesF
It mocks my grasp what unseen handsF
Have burst its iron bandsF
No mortal force this gate unbarr'dD
Where danger lives which terrors guardD
Dread powers its screaming hinges closeF
On this dire scene of impious deedsF
My feet are fix'd Dismay has boundD
My step on this polluted groundD
But lo the pitying moon a line of lightD
Athwart the horrid darkness dimly throwsF
And from yon grated window chases nightD

Ye visions that before me rollC
That freeze my blood that shake my soulC
Are ye the phantoms of a dreamI
Pale spectres are ye what ye seemI
They glide more nearJ
Their forms unfoldD
Fix'd are their eyes on me they bendD
Their glaring look is coldD
And hark I hearK
Sounds that the throbbing pulse of life suspendD

No wild illusion cheats thy sightD
With shapes that only live in nightD
Mark the native glories spreadD
Around my bleeding browM
The crown of Albion wreath'd my headD
When my father shook his spearJ
When his banner sought the skiesF
Her baffled host recoil'd with fearJ
Nor turn'd their shrinking eyesF
Soon as the daring eagle springsF
To bask in heav'n's empyreal lightD
The vultures ply their baleful wingsF
A cloud of deep'ning colour marks their flightD
Staining the golden dayD
But see amid the rav'nous broodD
A bird of fiercer aspect soarH
The spirits of a rival raceF
Hang on the noxious blast and traceF
With gloomy joy his destin'd preyD
Inflame th' ambitious wish that thirsts for bloodD
And plunge his talons deep in kindred goreH

View the stern form that hovers nighL
Fierce rolls his dauntless eyeL
In scorn of hideous deathN
Till starting at a brother's nameO
Horror shrinks his glowing frameO
Locks the half utter'd groanP
And chills the parting breathN
Astonish'd Nature heav'd a moanP
When her affrighted eye beheld the handsF
She form'd to cherish rend her holy bandsF

Look where a royal infant kneelsF
Shrieking and agoniz'd with fearJ
He sees the dagger pointed nearJ
A much lov'd brother's breastD
And tells an absent mother all he feelsF
His eager eye he casts aroundD
Where shall her guardian form be foundD
On which his eager eye would restD
On her he calls in accents wildD
And wonders why her step is slowQ
To save her suff'ring childD
Rob'd in the regal garb his brother standsF
In more majestic woeQ
And meets the impious stroke with bosom bareR
Then fearless grasps the murd'rer's handsF
And asks the minister of hell to spareR
The child whose feeble arms sustainS
His bleeding form from cruel deathN
In vain fraternal fondness pleadsF
For cold is now his livid cheekT
And cold his last expiring breathN
And now with aspect meekT
The infant lifts its mournful eyeL
And asks with trembling voice to dieL
If death will cure his heaving heart of painS
His heaving heart now bleedsF
Foul tyrant o'er the gilded hourU
That beams with all the blaze of powerU
Remorse shall spread her thickest shroudD
The furies in thy tortur'd earK
Shall howl with curses deep and loudD
And wake distracting fearJ
I see the ghastly spectre riseF
Whose blood is cold whose hollow eyesF
Seem from his head to startD
With upright hair and shiv'ring heartD
Dark o'er thy midnight couch he bendsF
And clasps thy shrinking frame thy impious spirit rendsF

Now his thrilling accents dieL
His shape eludes my searching eyeL
But who is he convuls'd with painS
That writhes in every swelling veinS
Yet in so deep so wild a groanP
A sharper anguish seems to liveL
Than life's expiring pang can giveL
He dies deserted and aloneP
If pity can allay thy woesF
Sad spirit they shall find reposeF
Thy friend thy long lov'd friend is nearJ
He comes to pour the parting tearR
He comes to catch the parting breathN
Ah heaven no melting look he wearsF
His alter'd eye with vengeance glaresF
Each frantic passion at his soulC
'Tis he has dash'd that venom'd bowlC
With agony and deathN

But whence arose that solemn callV
Yon bloody phantom waves his handD
And beckons me to deeper gloomG
Rest troubled form I comeW
Some unknown power my step impelsF
To horror's secret cellsF
For thee I raise this sable pallX
It shrouds a ghastly bandD
Stretch'd beneath thy eye shall traceF
A mangled regal raceF
A thousand suns have roll'd since lightD
Rush'd on their solid nightD
See o'er that tender frame grim Famine hangsF
And mocks a mother's pangsF
The last last drop which warm'd her veinsF
That meagre infant drainsF
Then gnaws her fond sustaining breastD
Stretch'd on her feeble knees beholdD
Another victim sinks to lasting restD
Another yet her matron arms would foldD
Who strives to reach her matron arms in vainS
Too weak her wasted form to raiseF
On him she bends her eager gazeF
She sees the soft imploring eyeL
That asks her dear embrace the cure of painS
She sees her child at distance dieL
But now her stedfast heart can bearR
Unmov'd the pressure of despairR
When first the winds of winter urge their courseF
O'er the pure stream whose current smoothly glidesF
The heaving river swells its troubled tidesF
But when the bitter blast with keener forceF
O'er the high wave an icy fetter throwsF
The harden'd wave is fix'd in dead reposeF

Say who that hoary form alone he standsF
And meekly lifts his wither'd handsF
His white beard streams with bloodD
I see him with a smile derideD
The wounds that pierce his shrivell'd sideD
Whence flows a purple floodD
But sudden pangs his bosom tearR
On one big drop of deeper dyeL
I see him fix his haggard eyeL
In dark and wild despairR
That sanguine drop which wakes his woeQ
Say Spirit whence its sourceF
Ask no more its source to knowQ
Ne'er shall mortal eye exploreH
Whence flow'd that drop of human goreH
Till the starting dead shall riseF
Unchain'd from earth and mount the skiesF
And Time shall end his fated courseF
Now th' unfathom'd depth beholdD
Look but once a second glanceF
Wraps a heart of human mouldD
In death's eternal tranceF

-
That shapeless phantom sinking slowQ
Deep down the vast abyss belowQ
Darts thro' the mists that shroud his frameO
A horror nature hates to nameO
Mortal could thine eyes beholdD
All those sullen mists enfoldD
Thy sinews at the sight accurstD
Would wither and thy heart strings burstD
Death would grasp with icy handD
And drag thee to our grizly bandD
Away the sable pall I spreadD
And give to rest th' unquiet deadD
Haste ere its horrid shroud encloseF
Thy form benumb'd with wild affrightD
And plunge thee far through wastes of nightD
In yon black gulph's abhorr'd reposeF
As starting at each step I flyL
Why backward turns my frantic eyeL
That closing portal pastD
Two sullen shades half seen advanceF
On me a blasting look they castD
And fix my view with dang'rous spellsF
Where burning frenzy dwellsF
Again their vengeful look and now a speechlessF
