Whatsoever ye would that men should do to you do ye even so to themA

Precept divine to earth in mercy givenB
O sacred rule of action worthy heavenB
Whose pitying love ordain'd the bless'd commandC
To bind our nature in a firmer bandC
Enforce each human suff'rer's strong appealD
And teach the selfish breast what others feelD
Wert thou the guide of life mankind might knowE
A soft exemption from the worst of woeE
No more the powerful would the weak oppressF
But tyrants learn the luxury to blessF
No more would slav'ry bind a hopeless trainG
Of human victims in her galling chainG
Mercy the hard the cruel heart would moveH
To soften mis'ry by the deeds of JoveH
And av'rice from his hoarded treasures giveH
Unask'd the liberal boon that want might liveH
The impious tongue of falshood then would ceaseI
To blast with dark suggestions virtue's peaceI
No more would spleen or passion banish restJ
And plant a pang in fond affection's breastJ
By one harsh word one alter'd look destroyK
Her peace and wither every op'ning joyK
Scarce can her tongue the captious wrong explainG
The slight offence which gives so deep a painG
Th' affected ease that slights her starting tearL
The words whose coldness kills from lips so dearM
The hand she loves alone can point the dartN
Whose hidden sting could wound no other heartN
These of all pains the sharpest we endureO
The breast which now inflicts would spring to cureO
No more deserted genius then would flyP
To breathe in solitude his hopeless sighP
No more would Fortune's partial smile debaseQ
The spirit rich in intellectual graceQ
Who views unmov'd from scenes where pleasures bloomR
The flame of genius sunk in mis'ry's gloomR
The soul heav'n form'd to soar by want deprestN
Nor heeds the wrongs that pierce a kindred breastN
Thou righteous Law whose clear and useful lightN
Sheds on the mind a ray divinely brightN
Condensing in one rule whate'er the sageS
Has proudly taught in many a labour'd pageS
Bid every heart thy hallow'd voice revereM
To justice sacred and to nature dearM
