Rhyme Scheme: ABCD EEFFGG HHIIJJ

ADDRESSED BY M D A YOUNG MAN OF TWENTYA
FOUR YEARS OF AGE THE NIGHT BEFORE HISB
EXECUTION TO A YOUNG LADY TO WHOMC
HE WAS ENGAGEDD
-
I-
-
THE hour that calls to death is nearE
It brings to me no throb of fearE
The breast that honour arms can braveF
The murd'rer's steel th' untimely graveF
But thou to whom I gave my heartG
From thee for ever must I partG
Wilt thou not hear my latest sigh-
Ah 'tis a cruel task to die-
-
-
II-
-
To morrow my clos'd eyes no moreH
Shall gaze on beauty I adoreH
To morrow sadd'ning every graceI
Unceasing tears shall bathe thy faceI
To morrow chill'd by death's cold graspJ
This hand no longer thine shall claspJ
For thou no more wilt thou be nigh-
Ah 'tis a cruel task to die-
