CREATION'S GOD with thought elateA
Thy hand divine I seeB
Impressed on scenes where all is greatA
Where all is full of theeB
-
Where stern the Alpine mountains raiseC
Their heads of massive snowD
When on the rolling storm I gazeC
That hangs how far belowD
-
Where on some bold stupendous heightE
The Eagle sits aloneF
Or soaring wings his sullen flightE
To haunts still more his ownF
-
Where the sharp rock the Chamois treadsG
Or slippery summit scalesH
Or where the whitening Snow bird spreadsG
Her plumes to icy galesH
-
Where the rude cliff's steep column glowsI
With morning's tint of blueJ
Or evening on the glacier throwsI
The rose's blushing hueJ
-
Or where by twilight's softer lightE
The mountain's shadow bendsK
And sudden casts a partial nightE
As black its form descendsK
-
Where the full ray of noon aloneF
Down the deep valley fallsL
Or where the sunbeam never shoneF
Between its rifted wallsL
-
Where cloudless regions calm the soulM
Bid mortal cares be stillN
Can passion's wayward wish controulN
And rectify the willN
-
Where midst some vast expanse the mindO
Which swelling virtue firesP
Forgets that earth it leaves behindO
And to it's heaven aspiresP
-
Where far along the desart airQ
Is heard no creature's callN
And undisturbing mortal earR
The avalanches fallN
-
Where rushing from their snowy sourceS
The daring torrents urgeT
Their loud toned waters headlong courseS
And lift their feathered surgeT
-
Where swift the lines of light and shadeU
Flit o'er the lucid lakeV
Or the shrill winds its breast invadeU
And its green billows wakeV
-
Where on the slope with speckled dyeW
The pigmy herds I scanX
Or soothed the scattered Chalets spyW
The last abode of manX
-
Or where the flocks refuse to passY
And the lone peasant mowsZ
Fixed on his knees the pendent grassY
Which down the steep he throwsI
-
Where high the dangerous pathway leadsA2
Above the gulph profoundB2
From whence the shrinking eye recedesA2
Nor finds repose aroundB2
-
Where red the mountain ash reclinesC2
Along the clifted rockD2
Where firm the dark unbending pinesC2
The howling tempests mockD2
-
Where level with the ice ribb'd boundB2
The yellow harvests glowN
Or vales with purple vines are crown'dB2
Beneath impending snowN
-
Where the rich min'rals catch the rayE2
With varying lustre brightE
And glittering fragments strew the wayE2
With sparks of liquid lightE
-
Or where the moss forbears to creepF2
Where loftier summits rearG2
Their untrod snow and frozen sleepF2
Locks all the uncolour'd yearG2
-
In every scene where every hourH2
Sheds some terrific graceI2
In Nature's vast o'erwhelming powerH2
THEE THEE my GOD I traceI2
