Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEDE FGFG HAHA IJIJ KLKL MCMC JNJN OPOPWHICH ESCAPED FROM THE WRITER'S HAND AND FAL | A |
LING DOWN THE AREA OF A HOUSE COULD NOT | B |
BE FOUND | C |
MISTAKEN Bird ah whither hast thou stray'd | D |
My friendly grasp why eager to elude | E |
This hand was on thy pinion lightly laid | D |
And fear'd to hurt thee by a touch too rude | E |
- | |
Is there no foresight in a Thrush's breast | F |
That thou down yonder gulph from me wouldst go | G |
That gloomy area lurking cats infest | F |
And there the dog may rove alike thy foe | G |
- | |
I would with lavish crumbs my bird have fed | H |
And brought a crystal cup to wet thy bill | A |
I would have made of down and moss thy bed | H |
Soft though not fashion'd with a Thrush's skill | A |
- | |
Soon as thy strengthen'd wing could mount the sky | I |
My willing hand had set my captive free | J |
Ah not for her who loves the Muse to buy | I |
A selfish pleasure bought with pain to thee | J |
- | |
The vital air and liberty and light | K |
Had all been thine and love and rapt'rous song | L |
And sweet parental joys in rapid flight | K |
Had led the circle of thy life along | L |
- | |
Securely to my window hadst thou flown | M |
And ever thy accustom'd morsel found | C |
Nor should thy trusting breast the wants have known | M |
Which other Thrushes knew when winter frown'd | C |
- | |
Fram'd with the wisdom nature lent to thee | J |
Thy house of straw had brav'd the tempest's rage | N |
And thou through many a Spring hadst liv'd to see | J |
The utmost limit of a Thrush's age | N |
- | |
Ill fated bird and does the Thrush's race | O |
Like Man's mistake the path that leads to bliss | P |
Or when his eye that tranquil path can trace | O |
The good he well discerns through folly miss | P |
