The Huguenot Lovers Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCDEFGF CHCHIJAK

Sorrowful pleading on her face is writtenA
With love commingled and my heart throbs fastB
Flooded with currents of a deep emotionA
Stirred by the memory of that awful pastB
Note the sad gaze of him who bends above herC
What say his eyes in answer to her ownD
What did he think as tenderly he kissed herC
What was the meaning of his whispered toneD
Spoke he of honor's claim poor love's outweighingE
Or did her circling arms so well enfoldF
That the white kerchief wearing badge of safetyG
He passed the lurking foe with spirit boldF
-
Ah they are vanished now the maid and loverC
Their history the wisest cannot tellH
Mayhap upon that night of cruel slaughterC
Eager to meet the zealot's hate he fellH
Mayhap in some fair corner of the KingdomI
Under the gentler rule of brave NavarreJ
They showed the kerchief to their children's childrenA
And told the story of the unholy warK
