Why do the wheels go whirring roundA
Mother motherB
Oh mother are they giants boundA
And will they growl foreverB
Yes fiery giants undergroundA
Daughter little daughterB
Forever turn the wheels aroundA
And rumble grumble everB
-
Why do I pick the threads all dayC
Mother motherB
While sunshine children are at playC
And must I work foreverB
Yes shadow child the live long dayC
Daughter little daughterB
Your hands must pick the threads awayC
And feel the sunshine neverB
-
Why do the birds sing in the sunD
Mother motherB
If all day long I run and runD
Run with the wheels foreverB
The birds may sing till day is doneD
Daughter little daughterB
But with the wheels your feet must runD
Run with the wheels foreverB
-
Why do I feel so tired each nightE
Mother motherB
The wheels are always buzzing brightE
Do they grow sleepy neverB
Oh baby thing so soft and whiteE
Daughter little daughterB
The big wheels grind us in their mightE
And they will grind foreverB
-
And is the white thread never spunD
Mother motherB
And is the white cloth never doneD
For you and me done neverB
Oh yes our thread will all be spunD
Daughter little daughterB
When we lie down out in the sunD
And work no more foreverB
-
And when will come that happy dayC
Mother motherB
Oh shall we laugh and sing and playC
Out in the sun foreverB
Nay shadow child we'll rest all dayC
Daughter little daughterB
Where green grass grows and roses gayC
There in the sun foreverB
