Have you forgotten you the chiefA
The art director presidentB
What not of the establishmentC
Forgot how for a moment briefA
The whole show all our strife and stirD
Went out for herD
-
You led me through your galleriesE
And dreams the pictures new and oldF
And good and bad the battles boldF
You fought with principalitiesE
And powers We chaffed and laughed awayG
Such woes that dayG
-
And built such castles domed and toweredH
For Art to live in by and byI
When men should know the How and WhyI
For Art to live in throned and doweredH
When the world's works and ways should beJ
Both fair and freeJ
-
From hope to rage and back againK
We flashed flung curses red as bombsL
At the dull age lit hecatombsL
Of lies and laws and flaws and thenK
Reached for the stars and plucked them downM
To make man's crownM
-
The Truth that was our cry the TruthN
Whose heart and mind whose lips and eyesL
Her first glance and her last surpriseL
Are Beauty All the while forsoothN
Bold Chance the blind interpreterD
Led us to herD
-
A school door swung and she was thereO
Strange how the proud world slunk awayG
And left her with the waning dayG
Alone All vanished unawareO
The class the great high windowed hallP
And we and allP
-
Yes all our plans the futile showQ
Of art wherewith rash man aspiresL
To breathe into the dust life's firesL
And be as God She stood aglowQ
Fresh from God's hand 'Twas all in vainR
-
Our hope our painR
God beat us at the game For herD
The dim day flared with rose and goldH
A slim moon softly aureoledH
She shone apart and would not stirD
Hesitant at the rim of spaceL
Veiling her faceL
-
Out in the dream she rose afarS
With Eve new flowered in paradiseL
With Helen whose effulgent eyesL
Men sang to through the crash of warT
With Aphrodite foam empearledH
Kindling the worldH
-
The winds of doom grew soft for herD
Nor dared even touch the curls that hidH
Her face in dusky gold nor chidH
With change that recreant pillagerD
Her still immortal lovelinessL
So brave to blessL
-
The place a temple was and weJ
So brave to blessL
The place a temple was and weJ
Tricked out with odds and ends of faithN
Mere rags worn thin by life and deathN
Profaned the immaculate mysteryJ
Looked on the truth with blasphemous eyesL
Afraid to riseL
-
The moment met us and was goneU
The proof of all and the despairO
We sought the dark growing awareO
Of our stript souls and then anonU
Tried all in vain to tread againU
The ways of menU
-
The bold words died upon our lipsL
The clatter of our feet grew stillV
Even now ah does it waft your willV
Through ether seas in winged shipsL
The sight of her beyond shut eyesL
The white surpriseL
