Battle-flags Of Illinois Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABC DEDEF GDGHI JBJBJ

Through the red dusk of war they flewA
From Shiloh to the seaB
Black fumes from shattered bolts that blewA
Withered the colors threeB
And crimson rains made sombre stainsC
-
For every flag a grave yes moreD
For each a score of gravesE
Crossed are the heroes' hands that boreD
No wind the furled folds wavesE
Sweet be their rest by soft peace blestF
-
Is there no end What mighty hostG
Of spirits ranged for warD
The signal of the Holy GhostG
Shall summon hence afarH
Vast armies wait in solemn stateI
-
Where valor fights for freedom thereJ
Till the last slave is freeB
These ragged flags will float in airJ
There will our heroes beB
And shall we dare fight with them thereJ
