A Little Old Maid Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAC DEDE EEEE FEFE GHGH EBEB EIEI

She grew like other girls and flowersA
Sheltered and tended daintilyB
And told her dolls through sunny hoursA
A prince would come her love to beC
-
And none denied her as she grewD
The kingdom where her prince was lordE
For him she bloomed and drank the dewD
Of youth and wore the virgin's swordE
-
From her strong tower of maidenhoodE
She saw brave men ride east and westE
And dreamed of peace in love's deep woodE
With babies nestling on her breastE
-
And when no knight her banner boreF
Nor hailed her with love's accoladeE
Silent beside her open doorF
She wondered first then grew afraidE
-
Afraid of quickened dust whereofG
Life made but phantoms for a showH
Afraid of laughter and of loveG
Of God and his unchanging NoH
-
And things the world calls wise and goodE
She did to bid her fear be stillB
Gave largess of her brains and bloodE
Chastened her bold far wandering willB
-
But withering ever at the heartE
She felt her spirit die unbornI
A ghost she moved on earth apartE
And feared to face the angels' scornI
