HAPPY boy happy boyB
David the immortal willedC
Youth a thousand thousand timesD
Slain but not once killedC
Swaggering again todayE
In the old contemptuous wayE
-
Leaning backward from your thighF
Up against the tinselled barG
Dust and ashes is it youH
Laughing boasting there you areG
First we hardly recognized youH
In your modern avatarG
-
Soldier rifle brown khakiI
Is your blood as happy soJ
Where s your sling or painted shieldK
Helmet pike or bowL
Well you re going to the warsM
That is all you need to knowJ
-
Graybeards plotted They were sadN
Death was in their wrinkled eyesO
At their tables with their mapsP
Plans and calculations wiseO
They all seemed for well they knewH
How ungrudgingly Youth diesO
-
At their green official baizeQ
They debated all the nightR
Plans for your adventurous daysQ
Which you followed with delightR
Youth in all your wanderingsS
David of a thousand slingsS
