Rhyme Scheme: ABCBB DEDFG HHGIJ KLLMM NONPQQThis might have been a place for sleep | A |
But as from that small hollow there | B |
Hosts of bright thistledown begin | C |
Their dazzling journey through the air | B |
An idle man can only stare | B |
- | |
They grip their withered edge of stalk | D |
In brief excitement for the wind | E |
They hold a breathless final talk | D |
And when their filmy cables part | F |
One almost hears a little cry | G |
- | |
Some cling together while they wait | H |
And droop and gaze and hesitate | H |
But others leap along the sky | G |
Or circle round and calmly choose | I |
The gust they know they ought to use | J |
- | |
While some in loving pairs will glide | K |
Or watch the others as they pass | L |
Or rest on flowers in the grass | L |
Or circle through the shining day | M |
Like silvery butterflies at play | M |
- | |
Some catch themselves to every mound | N |
Then lingeringly and slowly move | O |
As if they knew the precious ground | N |
Were opening for their fertile love | P |
They almost try to dig they need | Q |
So much to plant their thistle seed | Q |
