Lake Leman Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCDEFEFEEGHGHIJ IJKKLLMNMONPQPQRSRRS TUTVW WHWHXYXYIt is the sacred hour above the far | A |
Low emerald hills that northward fold | B |
Calmly upon the blue the evening star | A |
Floats wreathed in dusky gold | B |
The winds have sung all day but now they lie | C |
Faint sleeping and the evening sounds awake | D |
The slow bell tolls across the water I | C |
Am haunted by the spirit of the lake | D |
It seems as though the sounding of the bell | E |
Intoned the low song of the water soul | F |
And at some moments I can hardly tell | E |
The long resounding echo from the toll | F |
O thou mysterious lake thy spell | E |
Holds all who round thy fruitful margin dwell | E |
Oft have I seen home going peasants' eyes | G |
Lit with the peace that emanates from thee | H |
Those who among thy waters plunge arise | G |
Filled with new wisdom and serenity | H |
Thy veins are in the mountains I have heard | I |
Down stretched beside thee at the silent noon | J |
With leaning head attentive to thy word | I |
A secret and delicious mountain tune | J |
Proceeding as from many shadowed hours | K |
In ancient forests carpeted with flowers | K |
Or far where hidden waters wandering | L |
Through banks of snow trickle and meet and sing | L |
Ah what repose at noon to go | M |
Lean on thy bosom hold thee with wide hands | N |
And listen for the music of the snow | M |
But most as now | O |
When harvest covers thy surrounding lands | N |
I love thee with a coronal of sheaves | P |
Crowned regent of the day | Q |
And on the air thy placid breathing leaves | P |
A scent of corn and hay | Q |
For thou hast gathered as a mother will | R |
The sayings of her children in her heart | S |
The harvest thoughts of reapers on the hill | R |
When the cool rose and honeysuckle fill | R |
The air and fruit is laden on the cart | S |
Thou breathest the delight | T |
Of summer evening at the deep roofed farm | U |
And meditation of the summer night | T |
When the enravished earth is lying warm | V |
From the recent kisses of the conquering sun | W |
- | |
Dwell as a spirit in me O thou one | W |
Sweet natural presence In the years to be | H |
When all the mortal loves perchance are done | W |
Them I will bid farewell but oh not thee | H |
I love thee When the youthful visions fade | X |
Fade thou not also in the hopeless past | Y |
Be constant and delightful as a maid | X |
Sought over all the world and found at last | Y |
