Lake Leman Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCDEFEFEEGHGHIJ IJKKLLMNMONPQPQRSRRS TUTVW WHWHXYXY

It is the sacred hour above the farA
Low emerald hills that northward foldB
Calmly upon the blue the evening starA
Floats wreathed in dusky goldB
The winds have sung all day but now they lieC
Faint sleeping and the evening sounds awakeD
The slow bell tolls across the water IC
Am haunted by the spirit of the lakeD
It seems as though the sounding of the bellE
Intoned the low song of the water soulF
And at some moments I can hardly tellE
The long resounding echo from the tollF
O thou mysterious lake thy spellE
Holds all who round thy fruitful margin dwellE
Oft have I seen home going peasants' eyesG
Lit with the peace that emanates from theeH
Those who among thy waters plunge ariseG
Filled with new wisdom and serenityH
Thy veins are in the mountains I have heardI
Down stretched beside thee at the silent noonJ
With leaning head attentive to thy wordI
A secret and delicious mountain tuneJ
Proceeding as from many shadowed hoursK
In ancient forests carpeted with flowersK
Or far where hidden waters wanderingL
Through banks of snow trickle and meet and singL
Ah what repose at noon to goM
Lean on thy bosom hold thee with wide handsN
And listen for the music of the snowM
But most as nowO
When harvest covers thy surrounding landsN
I love thee with a coronal of sheavesP
Crowned regent of the dayQ
And on the air thy placid breathing leavesP
A scent of corn and hayQ
For thou hast gathered as a mother willR
The sayings of her children in her heartS
The harvest thoughts of reapers on the hillR
When the cool rose and honeysuckle fillR
The air and fruit is laden on the cartS
Thou breathest the delightT
Of summer evening at the deep roofed farmU
And meditation of the summer nightT
When the enravished earth is lying warmV
From the recent kisses of the conquering sunW
-
Dwell as a spirit in me O thou oneW
Sweet natural presence In the years to beH
When all the mortal loves perchance are doneW
Them I will bid farewell but oh not theeH
I love thee When the youthful visions fadeX
Fade thou not also in the hopeless pastY
Be constant and delightful as a maidX
Sought over all the world and found at lastY
