I am growing old and wearyA
Ere yet my locks are grayB
Before me lies eternityA
Behind me but a dayB
How fast the years are vanishingC
They melt like April snowD
It seems to me but yesterdayB
Twenty years agoD
-
There's the school house on the hill sideE
And the romping scholars allF
Where we used to con our daily tasksG
And play our games of ballF
They rise to me in visionsH
In sunny dreams and ho'I
I sport among the boys and girlsJ
Twenty years agoD
-
We played at ball in summer timeK
We boys with hearty willL
With merry shouts in winter timeK
We coasted on the hillL
We would choose our chiefs divide in bandsM
And build our forts of snowD
And storm those forts right gallantlyA
Twenty years agoD
-
Last year in June I visitedN
That dear old sacred spotO
But the school house on the hill sideE
And the merry shouts were notO
A church was standing where it stoodP
I looked around but noD
I could not see the boys and girlsJ
Of twenty years agoD
-
There was sister dear and brotherQ
Around the old home hearthR
And a tender Christian motherQ
Too angel like for earthS
She used to warn me from the pathsT
Where thorns and brambles growD
And lead me in the narrow wayB
Twenty years agoD
-
I loved her and I honored herQ
Through all my boyhood yearsU
I knew her joys I knew her caresV
I knew her hopes and fearsU
But alas one autumn morningC
She left her home belowD
And she left us there a weepingC
Twenty years agoD
-
They bore her to the church yardW
With slow and solemn paceX
And there I took my last fond lookY
On her dear peaceful faceX
They lowered her in her silent graveZ
While we bowed our heads in woeD
And they heaped the sods above her headA2
Twenty years agoD
-
That low sweet voice my mother's voiceB2
I never can forgetC2
And in those loving eyes I seeA
The big tears trembling yetC2
I try to tread the narrow wayB
I stumble oft I knowD
I miss how much the helping handD2
Of twenty years agoD
-
Mary Mary I will call youE2
'Tis not the old time nameF2
Sainted Mary blue eyed MaryA
Are you in heaven the sameF2
Are your eyes as bright and beautifulG2
Your cheeks as full of glowD
As when the school boy kissed you MayB
Twenty years agoD
-
How we swung upon the grape vineH2
Down by the GeneseeA
And I caught the speckled trout for youE2
While you gathered flowers for meA
How we rambled o'er the meadowsI2
With brows and cheeks aglowD
And hearts like God's own angelsJ2
Twenty years agoD
-
How our young hearts grew togetherQ
Until they beat as oneK2
Distrust it could not enterQ
Cares and fears were noneK2
All my love was yours dear MaryA
'Twas boyish love I knowD
But I ne'er have loved as then I lovedL2
Twenty years agoD
-
How we pictured out the futureQ
The golden coming yearsU
And saw no cloud in all our skyM2
No gloomy mist of tearsV
But ah how vain are human hopesN2
The angels came and OD
They bore my darling up to heavenK2
Twenty years agoD
-
I will not tell I cannot tellO2
What anguish wrung my soulP2
But a silent grief is on my heartQ2
Though the years so swiftly rollP2
And I cannot shake it off MayB
This lingering sense of woeD
Though I try to drown the memoryA
Of twenty years agoD
-
I am fighting life's stern battle MayB
With all my might and mainR2
But a seat by you and mother thereS2
Is the dearest prize to gainR2
And I know you both are near meA
Whatever winds may blowD
For I feel your spirits cheer meA
Like twenty years agoD
