Have ye heard of Fort Donelson's desperate fightB
Where the giant Northwest bared his arm for the rightB
Where thousands so bravely went down in the slaughterC
And the blood of the West ran as freely as waterC
Where the Rebel Flag fell and our banner aroseD
O'er an army of captured and suppliant foesD
Lo torn by the shot and begrimed by the powderC
The Old Flag is waving there prouder and prouderC
-
Heard ye of Shiloh where fierce BeauregardE
O'erwhelmed us with numbers and pressed us so hardE
Till our veteran supporters came up to our aidF
And the tide of defeat and disaster was staidF
Where like grain sheaves the slaughtered were piled on the plainG
And the brave rebel Johnston went down with the slainG
Lo torn by the shot and begrimed by the powderC
The Old Flag is waving there prouder and prouderC
-
Heard ye the cannon roar down by Stone RiverC
Saw ye the bleeding braves stagger and quiverC
Heard ye the shout and the roar and the rattleH
And saw ye the desperate surging of battleH
Volley on volley and steel upon steelI
Breast unto breast how they lunge and they reelI
Lo torn by the shot and begrimed by the powderC
The Old Flag is waving there prouder and prouderC
-
Heard ye of Vicksburg the Southern GibraltarC
Where the hands of our foemen built tyranny's altarC
Where their hosts are walled in by a cordon of bravesJ
And the pits they have dug for defense are their gravesJ
Where the red bombs are bursting and hissing the shotK
Where the nine thunders death and the charge follows hotK
Lo torn by the shot and begrimed by the powderC
The Old Flag is waving there prouder and prouderC
-
Heard ye from Gettysburg Glory to GodL
Bare your heads O ye Freemen and kneel on the sodL
Praise the Lord praise the Lord it is done it is doneM
The battle is fought and the victory wonM
They first took the sword and they fall by the swordN
They are scattered and crushed by the hand of the LordN
Lo torn by the shot and begrimed by the powderC
The Old Flag is waving there prouder and prouderC
