What hear I at the gateway ringingA
What bard upon the drawbridge singingA
Go bid him to repeat his songB
Here in the hall amid the throngB
The monarch criedC
The little page hiedC
As back he spedC
The monarch saidC
Bring in the gray haired minstrelD
-
I greet you noble lords and peersE
I greet you lovely damesF
O heaven begemmed with golden spheresE
Who knows your noble namesF
In hall of splendor so sublimeG
Close ye mine eyes 'tis not the timeG
To gaze in idle wonderH
-
The gray haired minstrel closed his eyesI
He struck his wildest airJ
Brave faces glowed like sunset skiesI
Cast down their eyes the fairJ
The king well pleased with the minstrel's songB
Sent the little page through the wondering throngB
A chain of gold to bear himK
-
O give not me the chain of goldC
Award it to thy bravesL
Before whose faces fierce and boldC
Quail foes when battle ravesL
Or give it thy chancellor of stateC
And let him wear its golden weightC
With his official burdensM
-
I sing I sing as the wild birds singA
That in the forest dwellN
The songs that from my bosom springA
Alone reward me wellN
But may I ask that page of thineO
To bring me one good cup of wineO
In golden goblet sparklingA
-
He took the cup he drank it allP
O soothing nectar thineO
Thrice bless'd the highly favored hallP
Where flows such glorious wineO
If thou farest well then think of meQ
And thank thy God as I thank theeQ
For this inspiring gobletC
