Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship Book ChapA
-
-
What hear I at the gateway ringingB
What bard upon the drawbridge singingB
Go bid him to repeat his songC
Here in the hall amid the throngC
The monarch criedD
The little page hiedD
As back he spedD
The monarch saidD
Bring in the gray haired minstrelE
-
I greet you noble lords and peersF
I greet you lovely damesG
O heaven begemmed with golden spheresF
Who knows your noble namesG
In hall of splendor so sublimeH
Close ye mine eyes 'tis not the timeH
To gaze in idle wonderI
-
The gray haired minstrel closed his eyesJ
He struck his wildest airK
Brave faces glowed like sunset skiesJ
Cast down their eyes the fairK
The king well pleased with the minstrel's songC
Sent the little page through the wondering throngC
A chain of gold to bear himL
-
O give not me the chain of goldD
Award it to thy bravesM
Before whose faces fierce and boldD
Quail foes when battle ravesM
Or give it thy chancellor of stateD
And let him wear its golden weightD
With his official burdensN
-
I sing I sing as the wild birds singB
That in the forest dwellO
The songs that from my bosom springB
Alone reward me wellO
But may I ask that page of thineP
To bring me one good cup of wineP
In golden goblet sparklingB
-
He took the cup he drank it allQ
O soothing nectar thineP
Thrice bless'd the highly favored hallQ
Where flows such glorious wineP
If thou farest well then think of meR
And thank thy God as I thank theeR
For this inspiring gobletD
