All day long the crash of cannonA
Shook the battle covered plainB
All day long the frenzied foemenB
Dashed against our lines in vainB
All the field was piled with slaughterC
Now the lurid setting sunB
Saw our foes in wild disorderC
And the bloody day was wonB
-
Foremost on our line of battleD
All day long a veteran stoodE
Stalwart brawny grim and steadyF
Black with powder smeared with bloodG
Never flinched and never falteredH
In the deadliest storm of leadI
And before his steady rifleD
Lay a score of foemen deadI
-
Never flinched and never falteredH
Till our shout of victory roseJ
Till he saw defeat disasterC
Overwhelmed our flying foesJ
Then he trembled then he totteredH
Gasped for breath and dropped his gunB
Staggered from the ranks and prostrateH
Fell to the earth His work was doneB
-
Silent comrades gathered round himK
And his Captain sadly cameL
Bathed his quivering lips with waterC
Took his hand and spoke his nameL
And his fellow soldiers softlyF
On his knapsack laid his headH
Then his eyes were lit with lusterC
And he raised his hand and saidH
-
Good bye comrades farewell CaptainB
I am glad the day is wonB
I am mustered out I reckonB
Never mind my part is doneB
We have marched and fought togetherC
Till you seem like brothers allM
But I hope again to meet youN
At the final bugle callM
-
Captain write and tell my motherC
That she must not mourn and cryO
For I never flinched in battleD
And I do not fear to dieO
You may add a word for MaryF
Tell her I was ever trueN
Mary took a miff one SundayH
And so I put on the blueN
-
And I know she has repentedH
But I never let her seeF
How it cut her crusty answerC
When she turned away from meF
I was never good at coaxingP
So I didn't even tryO
But you tell her I forgive herC
And she must not mourn and cryO
-
Then he closed his eyes in slumberC
And his spirit passed awayH
And his comrades spread a blanketH
O'er his cold and silent clayH
At dawn of morn they buried himK
Wrapped in his army blueN
On the bloody field of Fair OaksQ
Sleeps the soldier tried and trueN
